Inside Al-Qaeda and the Taliban: Beyond bin Laden and 9/11 ReviewSyed Saleem Shahzad (Asia Times Online) published some of the best and most insightful articles on terrorism in the past decade.
He was the first to interview leading commanders of al Qaeda's so-called shadow army, including Siraj Haqqani (leader of the Haqqani network), Ilyas Kashmiri (leader of Brigade 313), Mullah Nazir (South Waziristan), and Qari Ziaur Rahman (Kunar/Nuristan/Bajaur), and countless others.
I have consumed most books published on terrorism in the past decade, but a lot of those books lack insight,
because hardly anybody can venture into the tribal areas of Pakistan.
Syed Saleem Shahzad could.
If anybody knew what is going on in the al Qaeda's capital, it was Syed Saleem Shahzad.
His murder shortly after the publication of this book (possibly by the infamous Pakistani intelligence agency ISI) only confirms that some people were very worried by his reporting.
Anybody interested in terrorism should consider buying this book.
If you have doubts, read some of his many articles at Asia Times Online: [...]Inside Al-Qaeda and the Taliban: Beyond bin Laden and 9/11 Overview

The National Security Enterprise: Navigating the Labyrinth ReviewThe National Security Enterprise: Navigating the Labyrinth provides an outstanding survey of how the U.S. makes its national security decisions, covering how the National Security Council, Departments of Defense and State, and other government branches operate and how the current system is suffering from underlying organizational dysfunction. Included are how diplomats, military officers, spies and law enforcement officials interact, and how policy and their interactions affect national security processes as a whole. 7 Deadly Scenarios: A Military Futurist Explores the Changing Face of War in the 21st Century ReviewPreviously I reviewed the original edition, with only 7 scenarios and concluded that while Krepinevich's scenarios deserved careful thought, the desired reaction (more toys, tools and troops) also unwittingly created additional trip wires that would possibly involve the U.S. in a major confrontation while spending money we don't have. In this new edition the author adds another, eighth scenario involving the loss of Afghanistan after the U.S. removes the bulk of its forces. Unfortunately, by the time I got to #8, I was tired of the other 7 and their predictable pattern. More importantly, the scenario was not convincing, and I not only don't understand why we're in Afghanistan now, I'm even less concerned about what happens after we leave.
Bottom-Line: The U.S. military and Homeland Security spend at least 2X the proportion of GDP of the rest of the world, combined, on defense, and we're still not secure. It's time to figure out what we're doing wrong.7 Deadly Scenarios: A Military Futurist Explores the Changing Face of War in the 21st Century Overview

Shariah: The Threat To America: An Exercise In Competitive Analysis (Report of Team B II) ReviewThis is the seminal work that our nation needs. There is finally a single all-encompassing reference that details the modern Jihad threat to the Dar Al Harb (the "house of war"). It outlines the master plan being carried out by the Muslim Brotherhood to impose Shariah Law on the United States, and those people in our own government that are not only ignoring the threat, but in some cases are actually supporting the destruction of the U.S. Consitution by abdicating their professional duty to develop an appropriate national security response.
It clarifies how Islam is NOT just a religion, but an entire way of life that includes its own codified law called Shariah, which is meant to rule over the entire world and be enforced against ALL people, not just Muslims. It identifies how Shariah Law contradicts many of the protections in the Bill of Rights, and especially women's rights (specifically, such behavior as underage and forced marriages, honor killing, female genital mutilation, polygamy, and domestic abuse including marital rape--where's the National Organization for Women (NOW) when you need them?). It clarifies how senior government officials, as well as generals and admirals in the military, are failing their oath to protect and defend the Constitution. It highlights why anyone supporting Shariah in the United States is commiting sedition and treason. It identifies how the Muslim Brotherhood are secretly waging a "stealth Jihad" through scores of front organizations.
The West is led to believe that Jihad is nothing more than an "inner struggle" while there are in fact four types of Jihad: of the heart, the tongue, the pen, and the sword. The Muslim Brotherhood's plan is to settle in the West to conduct a "grand Jihad in eliminating the Western civilization from within and sabotaging its miserable house BY THEIR HANDS". Through its front organizations like the Council for American Islamic Relations (CAIR) and the Muslim Pulbic Affairs Council (MPAC), as well as dozens of others, the Muslim Brotherhood is twisting the protections of our own Constitution and using them to protect themselves behind the First Amendment while waging a very effective propaganda campaign. Ignorant Americans, and especially high-ranking government officials, are then duped into supporting the Muslim Brotherhood's efforts falsely believeing they are supporting "religious tolerance".
What many Westerners have been falsely led to believe is that "Islam is a religion of peace" when it is much more than just a religion, and it's not peaceful. This is NOT a First Amendment issue. Article 6 of the Constitution states that the Consitution shall be the law of the land. Any efforts to replace the Consitution with Shariah or any other foreign laws is seditious and treasonous. This reference outlines how current laws that were used against other seditous groups like communists during the Cold War can be applied as tools to protect our nation against Shariah.
Don't take my word for it. Read the Koran AFTER applying the Doctrine of Abrogation to its peaceful verses. And read this carefully prepared and heavily annotated analysis. Only then can one understand the true intent of Islam. To speak about Islam without having done the homework only breeds further ignorance. Prepare to become angry.Shariah: The Threat To America: An Exercise In Competitive Analysis (Report of Team B II) Overview

Gideon's Spies: The Secret History of the Mossad ReviewI thought this book was great in most ways. The Mossad is presented as an agency that will do anything to save Israel, to the point of assassination and framing their own agents. I have one major quibble though: his organization of the case histories/biographies/modern Israeli history was so annoying I wanted to tear my hair out by the end of the book. For example, a priest at Robert Maxwell's funeral leads to a shadowy meeting in the Vatican which goes to a flashback to Golda Meir meeting Paul VI to a flashback of James Jesus Angleton & Pius XII. A flashback to a flashback to a flashback?!?! And he starts the book with the Princess Diana tragedy, hinting more than a little it wasn't just a car crash. Apparently a Mossad agent was attempting to enlish Henri Paul around the time of her death. But after she dies, the Mossad is barely mentioned for 30 pages except that they probably know something about it. I know he's an English journalist and the Diana death makes juicy copy, but why don't we start a book on the history of the Mossad with SOMETHING ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE MOSSAD?!?! So, I give Gideon's Spies 5 stars on content but a half a star on organization.Gideon's Spies: The Secret History of the Mossad Overview

Legacy of Ashes: The History of the CIA ReviewAs Tim Weiner makes clear in the first pages of this book, the driving force for the creation of CIA was to establish a clearing house where all intelligence information available to the U.S. could collated, vetted, and organized into coherent knowledge. And as he also makes clear this mission was subverted and overshadowed from the start by the culture of the veterans of the WWII Office of Strategic Services (OSS) who dominated the early CIA. These veterans were far more comfortable with covert action and clandestine collection of intelligence than desk bound intelligence analysis. So from the time of its creation to the present, the Directorate of Intelligence (analytic shop) has existed in the shadow of the Directorate of Operations (DO). Virtually every CIA Director from the beginning has focused on one or all of the following: initiating DO operations; cleaning up messes left by DO operations; or reorganizing the DO to do a better job.
This book is a case in point. Although ostensibly about CIA as an institution, the book really focuses on DO and its alleged failures. This fascination with the DO by journalists, Presidents, and CIA Directors has allowed the analytic arm of CIA to atrophy from almost the very first. Yet the many failures and embarrassments that Weiner has chosen to chronicle in this book are as much the fault of DI as DO.
Now this book is essentially a massive and well written critique of CIA and especially the DO. For the most part it is pretty accurate, but as CIA has pointed out in a rather pitiful rebuttal of the book, it is not entirely fair and balanced. For example, in 1998 India exploded a nuclear weapon to the utter surprise and amazement of the entire U.S. Intelligence Community (IC). Weiner jumps on the CIA in particular for its failure to predict this event. What he did not mention was the fact that India used its considerable knowledge of the workings of the U.S. Intelligence System to develop and execute a masterful denial and deception program. Further, India has a world class counter-intelligence service that makes collection of secret intelligence in India a very dicey proposition in the best of circumstances. True CIA was guilty in this instance of mirror imaging and failed to creatively use a number of clues available from secret and open sources, but it also had a really tough nut to crack, As Weiner chronicles the many missteps that CIA has made, he would be more credible had he also gone into a bit more detail about the impressive obstacles faced by CIA operations officers. In the end this is a fascinating book that accurately chronicles a part, but not the entire CIA story.

Global Intelligence: The World's Secret Services Today (Global Issues) ReviewThis book is basically an alphabet soup breakdown of the intelligence agencies around the world, with more emphasis on some of the more important ones, and actually a reasonably lengthy explanation and breakdown about what has gone on in South Africa, at least organisationally.

Global Assemblages: Technology, Politics, and Ethics as Anthropological Problems ReviewThis book is a collection of the most exciting work being done in sociocultural anthropology and the social sciences more broadly. The innovation of this ethnographic research is that the authors examine their topics through very technical analyses, finding the ethical dimensions, often through expert interlocutors. A key premise of Global Assemblages is that epistemology (how to know) and ethics (how to act) are inextricably linked, a stance most academic disciplines currently reject.
We find that what are often portrayed as merely academic or philosophical debates (debates on objectivity versus social constructivism or the value of anecdotal evidence versus quantitative evidence, for example) are actually problems that people outside academia such as accountants, bandits, Alan Greenspan (or any other head of the Federal Reserve is), and securities traders face and find solutions to, sometimes on a daily basis.
The essays that stand out to me as the most interesting and groundbreaking are the ones by Bill Maurer on accounting, Janet Roitman on banditry, and Caitlin Zaloom on futures trading.
If you are a student in sociocultural anthropology this book is a must. It is also valuable for people from other disciplines who want to be part of the most exciting shift in the social sciences. Perhaps the best introduction to contemporary anthropology and ethnography is Anthropology as Cultural Critique by George Marcus and Michael M. J. Fischer, which is more accessible to most audiences because it was written with undergraduates in mind. Global Assemblages on the other hand may require more careful reading. Other important recent texts have been written by Paul Rabinow, Anna Tsing, George Marcus, Michel-Rolph Trouillot, among others.Global Assemblages: Technology, Politics, and Ethics as Anthropological Problems Overview
