American Exceptionalism and Human Rights ReviewIgnatieff's introductory essay is solid, but the rest of the contributions are only of interest if you already bemoan the ugly fact of American democracy obstructing the beautiful theories of international do-gooders. Look elsewhere for a serious treatment of this important subject.American Exceptionalism and Human Rights Overview

JavaScript: The Web Technologies Series ReviewI am told that earlier editions were even worse. How sad. The book is poorly written, the examples hard to follow, and the discussion of the language is incomplete. It is hard to explain why this book made it to the 5th edition. Do not buy this book if you have a choice. If it is mandated by your school wait till the first day of class to buy it-- you may find that your instructor has no use for it either and it is on the approved list though no choice or control of his/hers'.
Course technology is becoming a very popular choice among 2 year schools. The text book choices may be based on other than educational merit and may relate to the fact the the book comes with a ready made syllabus and approved course outline that neatly fits some committee recommendation, which in turn neatly facilitates accreditation. Or it could be that they like the slide decks. In any case there is no depth of instruction in this book, no pointers to other materials and most of the labs that I have seen ( I am using it in a course right now) are trivial. It will be of no use to the practitioner as reference and you are advised to ignore it, unless explicitly told to do a given assignment. There is not even a section for further reading, the very least you can expect in a book which is so incomplete.
If your school is using this book consider another school. It is that bad. If this is not possible speak to the instructor before hand you may find that the book is not really used in the class. If you must buy it buy used( you will find that frequent updates which do not update anything are the norm for this book and indeed most of course technology's books. This is exactly what it appears to be. Make use your department chair hears what you think. Make sure that you point them to the amazon site for other opinions. If you are lucky enough to have a choice of schools or instructors try to find one that does not use the book, or if that is not possible find one that 'uses' it in name only.
I would hate to see a 6th edition of this work.
I am also curious if Mr Gosselin's books are of equal caliber. Not all course Technology offerings are this poor, and perhaps a few are even pretty good, but if this is an indication of what they produce we are all in trouble if the trend continues.JavaScript: The Web Technologies Series Overview

IEC 61131-3: Programming Industrial Automation Systems: Concepts and Programming Languages, Requirements for Programming Systems, Decision-Making Aids (Book & Cdrom) ReviewThis book is more of a general programming guide using IEC 61131-3. That's o.k. except the name implies an emphasis on industrial automation systems yet many of the examples in the book aren't examples of the typical IA system.
I was hoping for more of a detailed outline of each language in IEC 61131-3. I would have liked to have seen a composite list of each type of block available in FBD. Instead, this book uses examples of different aspects of each language and how you can leverage the power as a whole.
As a general programming book it's average. The authors try to convey what they feel is a better way to program but to each his own. It's not the way *I* program.
I don't see a real value in this book (especially for the price) because a person who is tasked to program in one of the IEC 1131 languages had better already have a good idea how to build code.IEC 61131-3: Programming Industrial Automation Systems: Concepts and Programming Languages, Requirements for Programming Systems, Decision-Making Aids (Book & Cdrom) Overview

Foundations of Social Policy: Social Justice in Human Perspective ReviewFor years I have been searching for an introductory policy text that will give my BSW students a firm foundation without putting them to sleep. This book's explicit focus on social justice offers a powerful framework for understanding a wide range of issues, while its use of real case studies brings to life the human dimension of social policy. The first chapter of the text is the most difficult for my students, so I allow extra time and use the auxilliary resources on the Thompson website to be sure they master this abstract content.Foundations of Social Policy: Social Justice in Human Perspective Overview

Essentials of Computer Organization and Architecture ReviewThis book is an excellent introduction to what makes up a modern PC and how it came to be designed that way. It's difficult to write a book like this as you can never tell just how much your students already know and how much depth you need to give them. For instance in the history of computers they talk a little about the vacuum tubes used in the early machines. Should that be there are not? I frankly don't know. Then there's a discussion on RISC vs. CISC machines. In the real world these seem to be merging so that it's really hard to tell which machines are what. Does the student need to know, or care about this? All in all, I think the authors have done a very good job of introducing the student to the structure of a PC.
Their discussion on benchmarking computers is excellent, just the right mixture of what a benchmark is supposed to do and how people have cheated on benchmarking. I was reminded of the old saying: "there are liars, damn liars, and benchmarks." And in their discussion on MIPS (Millions of Instructions Per Second). They quote that many people really believe that MIPS stands for "Meaningless Indicators of Performance for Salesmen." Yep! I agree.
Updated and revised with the latest data in the field, The Essentials of Computer Organization and Architecture, Third Edition is a comprehensive resource that addresses all of the necessary organization and architecture topics, yet is appropriate for the one-term course. This best-selling text correlates to the 2008 ACM-IEEE Computer Science Curriculum update and exposes readers to the inner workings of a modern digital computer through an integrated presentation of fundamental concepts and principles. The authors present real-world examples and focus on practical applications, thus encouraging students to develop a "big picture" understanding of how essential organization and architecture concepts are applied in the world of computing.Essentials of Computer Organization and Architecture Overview

Principles of Network and System Administration ReviewThis work is a good one on the non-technical side of system adminsitration. It does not deal with stuff like HOW to install a system, but the WHYs, such as WHY you want to properly document your installations.
This sort of work has been needed for a long time, since "The Keys to Successful Unix System Management" went out of print. However, this work may be a bit too academic for many admins. They might find the recent "Practice of System and Network Administration" to be a bit better. If you can afford both, do so.Principles of Network and System Administration Overview

Inside Al-Qaeda and the Taliban: Beyond bin Laden and 9/11 ReviewSyed Saleem Shahzad (Asia Times Online) published some of the best and most insightful articles on terrorism in the past decade.
He was the first to interview leading commanders of al Qaeda's so-called shadow army, including Siraj Haqqani (leader of the Haqqani network), Ilyas Kashmiri (leader of Brigade 313), Mullah Nazir (South Waziristan), and Qari Ziaur Rahman (Kunar/Nuristan/Bajaur), and countless others.
I have consumed most books published on terrorism in the past decade, but a lot of those books lack insight,
because hardly anybody can venture into the tribal areas of Pakistan.
Syed Saleem Shahzad could.
If anybody knew what is going on in the al Qaeda's capital, it was Syed Saleem Shahzad.
His murder shortly after the publication of this book (possibly by the infamous Pakistani intelligence agency ISI) only confirms that some people were very worried by his reporting.
Anybody interested in terrorism should consider buying this book.
If you have doubts, read some of his many articles at Asia Times Online: [...]Inside Al-Qaeda and the Taliban: Beyond bin Laden and 9/11 Overview

The Nawal El Saadawi Reader ReviewThis book should be read by anyone interested in Egyptian polictics, women's lives, and how Middle Easterners view Westerners. Saadawi is a psychiatrist by training and is in her mid 70s. She expounds on such topics as the rise of fundamentalism and its backlash against women and the negative effects of globalization. For example she points out that back when she was in medical school, in the early 50s, none of the women in her class wore the veil. She includes a very touching vignette about one of her patient, a young woman who goes crazy from isolation imposed by her distant fundamentalist father. While I don't necessarily agree with all of Dr. Saadawi's views they are certainly enlightening and thought provoking. Dr. Saadawi has also suffered imprisonment under Sadat's presidency and death threats from fundamentalists for her opinions. The Nawal El Saadawi Reader Overview

A Novel Approach to Politics: Introducing Political Science through Books, Movies, and Popular Culture ReviewI've used this book for several introductory courses to Comparative Government and I will use it again and again. Aside from the fact that the students loved it (as a student put it: "It's the first time I actually read the footnotes in a book."), they also learned a lot. Don't be fooled: the book is funny and light-hearted, but it gets a lot of information across, but because of the tone of the book, students retain more information from it. I wish they had a chapter dedicated specifically to political parties, tough, and I do hope they will come up with a new edition.A Novel Approach to Politics: Introducing Political Science through Books, Movies, and Popular Culture Overview

Managing and Organizations: An Introduction to Theory and Practice ReviewSo as to respond to the exigencies of globalization, the world of managing, managers and management has substantially changed in the last two decades or so. While some say that management discourse is to be viewed from the post-modernist perspective; others argue that we are reverting back to basics of management. Market, competition, competencies, capacity building, culture, diversity, empowerment, teams, lean organizations are some of the buzz words in general management literature today. Managers' commitment in the new era is being tested not on the touchstone of loyalty to the owner or the organization, but on performance and sensitivity to the needs of the organization and other stakeholders. In the era of globalization, the general topics in the discipline of management are also changing. But not all general management textbooks have shifted their focus adequately from traditional functions to the contemporary ones. The book under review meets this demand of the subject quite well.
Some of the salient features of this interesting text are as follows: The coverage of topics is quite comprehensive and updated, including issues like organizational politics, cultures, knowledge and learning, innovation and change, managing strategy and managing globalization. Each chapter provides overview of theories involved in succinct and lucid manner including the contemporary developments in the subject concerned. The theories involved have been traced in terms of their historical development. Each chapter prescribes suggested additional readings, most of which are path-breaking works. A good bit of additional material is also available in the form of maps, images, charts, and boxes as tools for learning and examining the material. Above all, this text meets requirements of a well-written text. The reader finds the narration in a tremendous flow. The text is also supported by an instructor's manual and an interactive website that provides additional material for teachers and students, including more cases, quick quizzes, short movies from experts introducing students to main themes, as well as a free online reader of important journal articles that relate to the topics discussed.
Writing inspiring textbook is an art. Throughout the book the authors are aware of what is happening in various areas of management today. The authors rightly call it "a realist guide to management". They have also succeeded well at several places questioning the supposedly unquestionable; quite a postmodernist venture. Coherence is remarkable; rarely does the reader encounter patches of disinterest in the concepts being elaborated.

Knowledge Emergence: Social, Technical, and Evolutionary Dimensions of Knowledge Creation ReviewThis book provides a collection of diverse perspectives on knowledge activities ranging from creativity and technology infrastructure to cross-border knowledge creation and sectoral strategies in Asia.
The material is academic and well-researched; it covers 15 chapters from 19 contributors, most of them professors from US and Japanese universities. The book is the outcome of a KM conference sponsored by the Sasakawa Peace Foundation.
Ikujiro Nonaka is the author of "The Knowledge-Creating Company" and "Enabling Knowledge Creation." Toshihiro Nishiguchi is the author of "Strategic Industrial Sourcing" and "Managing Product Development."
A fundamental thread uniting these essays is the idea that knowledge must be "nurtured" rather than "managed," according to the editors.
The Japanese term ba refers to a space-time nexus, the physical and/or mental space shared by co-workers, whose nature defines the scale and scope of knowledge creation through its various phases like socialization (originating ba), externalization (dialoguing ba), combination (systematizing ba) and internalization (exercising ba).
Care is an important requisite for building trust for knowledge-sharing in an organization. There are four modes of knowledge creation, depending on whether there is low care (individuals are left to their own; employees therefore exchange explicit knowledge) or high care (individuals are supported by a strong social network; tacit knowledge is shared) and whether there is creation of individual or organizational knowledge.
Such humanistic models of knowledge emergence encompass "wandering inside and outside" the organization, and accommodate emotional facets like freedom, interest, commitment, charisma and safety. Notable examples include the Seven-Eleven chain in Japan (through practices like the use of field counselors to encourage dialogue and idea sharing) and Maekawa Seisakusho (through knowledge vision for building and energizing ba).

"Certain types of knowledge can be created and communicated only through sharing time and space together," according to the authors.
New IT platforms and tools along with human-oriented approaches can help greatly in knowledge sharing processes: CAD/CAM/CAE (which improve the efficiency of product developers' inductive, deductive and abductive reasoning processes), simulation (to encourage experimentation), and prototyping (to refine solution models).
The authors call for a blend of human-oriented as well as systematic-rationality-oriented approaches to KM. For instance, companies like Boeing resort to advanced computer networks as well as co-location of project members.
In industries like software ("the quintessential knowledge industry"), the knowledge component in the end-products is nearly total. Companies like Microsoft use a "synch-and-stabilise" strategy (in contrast to a sequential "waterfall" model) where teams work in parallel, synchronise their activities, and periodically stabilize the multiple releases.
Cross-border knowledge creation within multinational companies involves IT platforms, identification of centers of excellence, customer/partner alliances, links with expert organization/universities/thinktanks, and a mix of short-, medium- and long-term movements of people across borders.
Dispersed innovation centers in countries around the globe are leading to joint knowledge creation at local and global levels in MNCs, which thus function as knowledge-creating networks. Nonaka identifies this cross-border synergistic process as "global knowledge creation" and sees it as the key process of globalisation.
Challenges can arise here in enabling knowledge transfers between cultures with differing levels of egalitarian work cultures, and in appointment of managers in foreign branches depending on variations in management style. According to research by Ronnie Lessem and Franz-Friedrich Neubauer, the Anglo-Saxon orientation to knowledge creation can be categorized as pragmatic, the French-Nordic as rational, Japanese as holistic, and Latin as humanistic.
Symbiotic co-evolution of organizations can also create knowledge, as evinced in the Japanese aircraft and electronics industries and the South Korean chip company Samsung.
Cooperation across entire industrial sectors occurs with varying levels of intensity and collective benefits in different countries of the world. For instance, it may be the case that US companies are better at learning from and with competitors than Japanese companies.
Samsung leveraged a variety of techniques like "knowledge catch-up" mode (prevalent in many emerging economies), knowledge pioneering, knowledge exposure, co-opetition, absorptive capacity, migratory knowledge (from the Korean diaspora), M&As, and pro-actively creating internal crises to intensify the work pace and accelerate the process of knowledge conversion, according to Linsu Kim, author of "Imitation to Innovation: The Dynamics of Korea's Technological Learning."
Other cultural factors - such as the extremely hard-working habits of the people of South Korea, its cramped and cold environment, memories of Japanese occupation, and a determination to out-compete Japan - cannot be duplicated in other countries, according to Kim.
In sum, this is an informative and wide-ranging book, and opens the door to many more research questions, working hypotheses, and KM methodologies. It forms an effective bridge between other books that focus either on the organizational or sectoral/national aspects of innovation, knowledge and competitiveness.Knowledge Emergence: Social, Technical, and Evolutionary Dimensions of Knowledge Creation Overview

The English is Coming: How One Language is Sweeping the World ReviewIt's an exciting time for the English language. All over the world, people are learning English and using it as a lingua franca, a common language. Everyone has an opinion on the merits and the detriments of a single language gaining so much influence - it makes communication easier if more people speak a common language, but at what price? Are other languages being shoved out of existence by this language gorilla?
Meanwhile, while people debate the influence English is having on the world, what influence is the world having on English? It's apparent that the English people are speaking in Singapore, for instance, is not the English people are speaking in Texas or in Zimbabwe. And English, or Englishes, aren't sitting still - they're mutating and morphing at a furious pace. What's happening?
Several recent books attempt to answer these questions and figure out where English is going. The English is Coming is one of the more entertaining ones I've seen lately. Leslie Dunton-Downer initially takes a traditional route by looking at the history of English as a language and as a lingua franca. (You can't tell where you're going until you know where you've been.) She does this in an easy manner, free of academic jargon. I imagine that middle schoolers and older would find it easy to follow.
Dunton-Downer's book is not only conversational in tone, but it appeals to those of us with short attention spans. It jumps from topic to topic smoothly, and breaks things up every so often with the story of a word that has transcended English and gone international, such as taxi and shampoo. Some of the stories are familiar - okay and bikini, for instance. Others choices are debatable, such as cookie and safari. But they are all interesting.
The English is Coming stands in contrast to the recent Globish: How the English Language Became the World's Language by Robert McCrum. McCrum was one of the writers of the excellent PBS series of several decades ago, The Story of English. In Globish, he loses a lot of his credibility by making outrageous claims that English is, by its nature, conducive to democracy and other fine qualities. Globish is rubbish. The English is Coming, on the other hand, is mostly even-handed about English, although Dunton-Downer makes the case that English is an excellent choice for a global language because it is inherently easy to learn. I wonder if that's true - it seems like a difficult language to learn, but as a native English speaker, I can't say.

Slow Violence and the Environmentalism of the Poor ReviewBeyond the lens of a media trained on the dramatic scenes of hurricanes, wars, and terror attacks, the real violence at work, according to Rob Nixon's new book, Slow Violence and the Environmentalism of the Poor, is one that works insidiously over time and outside of view on the poorest and most vulnerable citizens of the planet. Instead of just chronicling the despicable practices of energy conglomerates, big oil, armament manufacturers and the coalition of the willing--the IMF, World Bank, and neoliberal governments like our own, Nixon's book does something much more interesting. He focuses on the literary and imaginative responses of writer-activists around the world as they have joined forces with indigenous peoples and the poor to save their lands and ways of life. Nixon, who grew up in South Africa under apartheid and who has spent much of his own literary and scholarly work on environmental justice issues, is a keen observer of how writer-activists have learned to use a whole range of literary forms (novels, plays, essays, blogs, testimonial protest, and literary journalism) to counter the powerful forces at work in the name of globalization, economic development, progress, and democracy. With lucidity and careful contextualization, Nixon presents the work of several key writers and describes how their passion, outrage, and intellectual and artistic influences find a voice in their causes. We learn of the heroic work of Ken Saro-Wiwa exposing the horrific poisoning of the lands and fishing culture of the Ogoni people of Nigeria by Shell Oil. We follow the work and life of Nobel Peace Prize-winning Wangari Maathai as she helps to organize farmers and women to plant trees to save the depleted soils in Kenya. And, In India, Nixon examines the powerful protest essays and journalism of Arundhati Roy's in her support of indigenous Indians trying to save their lands against transnational mining and the mega-dam industry. But throughout the book, Nixon gives us a whole range of writers from the global south and north who have found "imaginative strategies," as he calls them, to shed light on various slow forms of cultural and environmental degradation from e-waste dumping, depleted uranium from US bombings in Iraq and Afghanistan, and even the seemingly benign billion dollar global tourism industry. From the viewpoint of the writer-activist, Nixon reminds us that writers since the monumental works of Rachel Carson and Nadine Gordimer have always played an indispensible role in speaking truth to the powerful forces of industry and in inspiring local activism in the protection of the environment and those who depend on its health.

Asterisk: The Definitive Guide ReviewWhether you have a passing curiosity about Asterisk or your very livelihood depends upon it, this is THE one Asterisk book you MUST have on your shelf (or e-shelf).
Originally called "Asterisk, The Future of Telephony", the new title is more apropos. Not only is "the future of telephony" a present-day reality, but all earlier editions have been the de-facto definitive guides. The third edition welcomes contributions from brilliant Asterisk head engineer, Russell Bryant.
Our venture capital fund uses Asterisk to bring efficiency to our our portfolio companies. I also use Asterisk personally to build "crazy powerful" and fun telephony solutions for myself and family. With stunning versatility and power of Asterisk, it's no wonder there are more Asterisk servers running than all the Google and Facebook servers combined! Asterisk has grown up to be a major force in telecommunications, and this book lives up to its title.

One Fall ReviewIf you're a pro wrestling fan who likes to read wrestling columns and reviews on the Internet, you must read this book. One Fall is a novel that takes place behind the scenes of a fictional wrestling promotion, where young wrestler Joey Mayhem has burst onto the scene and become an overnight sensation. As we watch Joey climb to the top, we also read along as an Internet columnist uncovers a monumental scandal in the wrestling world. These two plots collide in a thrilling and surprising climax.
In just a few hundred pages, the whole modern world of pro wrestling gets its due. We see the struggle of those starving on the Independent circuit, trying to get their shot. We see veteran wrestlers playing dirty politics as they try desperately to hold onto their fading glory. We see how the Internet, for better or worse, has opened the curtain on the shady behind the scenes dealings of this staged sport.
But my favorite part of the novel is all the nods to the real world of pro wrestling. There are characters in this story who remind us of HHH, Sting, Hogan, Flair, The Undertaker, and Vince McMahon. The plot takes place in an environment similar to the late 90's world of North American Wrestling, where two rival promotions fought over ratings on Monday night television. There's even a wink at the "Internet Wrestling Community" for those who know what they're looking for.
One Fall perfectly captures the essence of pro wrestling, and is obviously written by someone who knows and loves it. I blazed through it and enjoyed every word, and I recommend it highly.

Decoding Air Travel: A Guide to Saving on Airfare and Flying in Luxury ReviewAs noted by other reviewers, Nicholas Kralev was a diplomacy reporter for several years, and flew all over the world on the newspaper's dime -- but newspapers haven't been the most thriving businesses over the past several years, so he had to make the most of a modest travel budget. And he doesn't like flying coach. So he learned the ins and outs of airfares, frequent flyer programs, upgrades, bonuses, and began to think strategically and methodically as he planned out his travels. His travels also earned him a regular travel column in the Washington Times.
Kralev has left the Times and has been offering paid seminars at which he teaches techniques for getting the most out of travel for the least amount of money. And having been teaching these seminars for a year, he's now written a book. It's less expensive than a seminar, and this way it fits your schedule. You should buy it.
The book is broken down into three sections: booking tickets, the trip itself, and making the most of frequent flyer programs.
In section one, across six chapters, Kralev offers the best introduction to airfare construction and searching out the best airfares that I've ever read. And I write a popular travel blog that's been recommended in the New York Times and Wall Street Journal, so I'm no slouch on this stuff.
The book isn't for everyone. You might be happy going to Kayak, Bing, or Hipmunk and booking whatever itinerary pops up and looks the cheapest. If that's you, and you're good, then the book may not be for you.
If you want to be more advanced than that, really understand how airfare and travel works and how to use that knowledge for your benefit, then it's a worthwhile investment.
Kralev takes you completely through looking up the cheapest airfares, understanding the rules of the fare, and finding flights that (1) match those rules and (2) have inventory available at the lowest price. He explains concepts like same-day confirmed changes, standby, coach airfares that offer confirmed upgrades to first class, and married segments.
In walking you through how to use this information to book the best flights for you -- whether that means the cheapest flights, the flights with upgrade availability, or the flights that will earn you the most miles -- he gives great examples.
In the second section, the book takes you through buying your tickets, making changes to your reservation at the lowest cost, handling irregular operations (weather, mechanical, and other delays and cancellations), and obtaining compensation from an airline for your inconveniences.
The final five chapters are all about using frequent flyer programs: choosing the right program for you, making the most of airline alliances, obtaining elite status (by flying and by other means) and the benefits of status, the ins and outs of upgrades both domestic and international, finding airline award seats.
The book is a good read, a technical subject but written by an experienced journalist who has been there/done that and who has spent the last year teaching others to do it to through paid seminars. Frequent flyers looking to learn to get the lowest airfares and get the most for their money will find this book to be money well-spent.Decoding Air Travel: A Guide to Saving on Airfare and Flying in Luxury Overview
