AMERICA REBORN: Book Three of the Clash-of-Civilizations Trilogy ReviewIslamic terrorists destroyed five US cities in THE RINGS OF ALLAH. In BEHOLD AN AHSEN HORSE President Alexander brings the US back from nuclear disaster and strikes hard, unleashing the full power of the US military and bringing vengeance upon those who struck her. Now, in AMERICA REBORN, Alexander sets out to finish what he began in ASHEN HORSE, the complete eradication of Islam from the world!
To accomplish this, he uses all the military forces at his disposal. B-52's destroy Islamic strongholds from the air, while US Army Rangers bring the fight to the enemy. As this unfolds, Alexander must deal with two domestic crises as well. Liberal state governors challenge his authority and his military policies, while Mexican drug cartels attempt to invade the southern US. Alexander uses his intellectual prowess and his military command authority in both cases as he pushes towards his vision of a safe, secure United States, free from terrorism and drug-related violence.
Lee Boyland does not disappoint in this, the third in his Clash of Civilizations trilogy. Once again the action is fast and vivid, keeping the reader engaged and making this book difficult to put down. Though more politically charged than either of the first two books, President Alexander's personality and character make even the non-military moments meaningful and enjoyable to the reader. My favorite part of this book (and indeed the entire trilogy), is the way that, in addition to being extremely entertaining, it makes the reader think about political and military issues relevant to our current world order. Overall, this book was an excellent close-out to a very well written and professionally done series. Too bad it's only a trilogy!
Highly recommended by fans of the techno-thriller or military genre.

Apocalypse in Islam ReviewI have a detailed review of this book up on Aaron Zelin's Jihadology site, so I'll just give you the gist of it here...
I open with these two paragraphs:
Jean-Pierre Filiu's book, Apocalypse in Islam (University of California Press, 2011) makes a crucially important contribution to our understanding of current events - it illuminates not just one but a cluster of closely-related blind-spots in our current thinking, and it does so with scholarship and verve.
Al-Qaida's interest in acquiring nuclear weapons -- and Iran's - and the safety of Pakistan's nuclear materiel - and the situation in Jerusalem - depending how you count `em, there are a half dozen or so glaring world problems where one spark in the Mahdist underbrush might transform a critical situation. And yet as Ali Allawi put it in his talk to the Jamestown Foundation on Mahdism in Iraq a few years back, Mahdists ferments still tend to be "below our radar".
and close with this conclusion:
Filiu's book offers a powerful, accessible, and scholarly introduction to a set of critical issues that have largely escaped our notice until recently. Glenn Beck is about to thrust the topic of Mahdism before his core audience with an hour-long documentary this week, and the popular Christian fiction writer Joel Rosenberg's most recent novel is titled The Twelfth Imam - so Mahdism is seeping into popular awareness, particularly (and perhaps not surprisingly) in its Shi'ite form.
Filiu's book is well placed to serve as an antidote, both to the popular misrepresentations and overstatements of Rosenberg and Beck, and to the casual dismissal that has characterized much scholarly consideration of these topics. It is an important book - and though the year is less than a month old, will very likely wind up being my choice for book of the year.

My Brother, My Enemy: America and the Battle of Ideas Across the Islamic World ReviewWhy do they hate us? How'd we miss Osama? Why do Muslims and Christians kill each other? These are a few of the conundrums author Philip Smucker tackles as he dissects the roots of Islamic extremism, global jihad, and the disconnect between Islam and the West.
The former war correspondent and Pulitzer Prize nominated investigative journalist's previous book, the acclaimed Al Qaeda's Great Escape (2004), revealed how the American military failed to capture Osama bin Laden in the highlands of Afghanistan. His recent follow-up, My Brother, My Enemy, is an enlightening and insightful narrative examining why US foreign policy is failing again, this time to win over the hearts and minds of the Islamic world.

As an American living in Indonesia, a moderate Muslim democracy of more than 240 million people, I see a different face of Islam than is often depicted on television screens in the West. I applaud the author's latest offering as a compelling commentary on this perception gap examining not only the causes, but offering insights for resolution.
Philip Smucker's edifying treatise is one not only politicians and military brass should heed, but the western public as well.

Willful Blindness: A Memoir of the Jihad ReviewAndrew McCarthy writes with clarity, depth and self-effacement about the lead up to and the successful 1995 prosecution of Omar Abdel Rahman, the Blind Sheikh, and his terrorist followers. As lead Assistant United States Attorney, McCathy's knowledge and attention to detail fascinate. The intricacies in mounting the prosecution, avoiding the pitfalls and foibles of the FBI and New York's Joint Terrorism Task Force, keeping a difficult informant from refusing to cooperate, struggling with the rules of admissible evidence, rival the best in any police procedural mystery; this is not Sam Waterston spouting the script of "Law and Order," this is the argot of a real life Federal prosecutor and it is daunting. No Hollywood script can capture the nuance and judgment needed to bring a case like this to its successful conclusion.
McCarthy, a talented writer, draws deep insights from his experience into the shortcomings of prosecuting terrorists as criminals. He ends with a thoughtful exposition of the disconnect between national security and criminal law. He is a voice of clarity, reason and experience in the dialogue now going in America on issues of law and national security.Willful Blindness: A Memoir of the Jihad Overview

United in Hate: The Left's Romance with Tyranny and Terror ReviewUnited In Hate -- The Left's Romance With Tyranny and Terror is a book that examines the seamy underbelly of the radical Left which considers Western society and its values an anathema. Dr. Jamie Glazov, the Managing Editor of FrontPage Magazine, methodically details the causational factors that have lead modern Leftists to adhere to the death and destruction mantra of tyrannical Islamic Jihadists.
The Twin Towers are destroyed, 2973 people die in the attack and the radical Left cheers; the war in Iraq is won and the Left expels a disgusted sigh; totalitarian thugs kill innocent millions that the Left justifies as a "cleansing" required to forge a utopian society; suicidal Jihadists shred shoppers in malls with nail bombs and are excused by the Left as door-matted victims striking back at their oppressors; women are vilified, stoned, mutilated and killed by radical Muslims as Leftist feminists remain silent, save here in America where they rail mightily against a country club that's denied membership to a female executive.
What draws Leftists moth-like toward the annihilating fires of unbridled totalitarianism, or drives them to slavishly worship at the feet of dictators that kick them to the curb when they are considered no longer useful? Why does the Left cleave to a radical Islamic terrorism that vows to destroy all non-believers, including them? Dr. Glazov answers these and other "head scratching" questions in a court-ready presentation of the Left's mindset that will make forensic psychologists proud.
The Left's hatred and rejection of Western civilization, its freedoms and values, begins with an acute sense of alienation from it, and unable to "fit in" the Left believes radical societal change, regardless of the consequences, is necessary. After all it's the West's fault that the Left has no sense of purpose or direction. Although the Left vehemently argues against this premise, its words and actions prove Dr. Glazov's case.
The ideological descendents of the communist/progressive Left that spent its capital hoping the West would lose the Cold War to the Soviet Union are today's leftist core. Based on their hatred for the United States, the Left has forged a symbiotic relationship with radical Islam, whose hatred for America equals theirs. Both make it clear that they consider Western civilization evil and unworthy of preservation. Violent revolution is the Left's path to change; the Jihadists' follow the path of war and annilation.
Some might think Dr. Glazov has taken a wrong turn in his analysis of the radical Left's agenda and beliefs. If so, they should read the scurrilous quotes of Michael Moore extolling the virtues of the "Iraqi freedom fighters," or Ward Churchill's and Jeremiah Wright's crowing after 9/11 that "America's chickens have come home to roost." Or, they should examine the genuflexing before the world's tyrants by the likes of Jimmy Carter, Sean Penn and Tom Hayden. Dr. Glazov's take on the radical Left is correct and as sharp as a tightly focused laser.
Should the book cause even one radical Leftist to re-examine his or her contorted beliefs and return from the "dark side," Dr. Glazov's efforts will be a resounding success. A great thought provoking read!

Do They Hear You When You Cry ReviewThere are some books that are so wonderful, so intense, that I simply get lost in them for the few days it takes me to finish them, and once I'm done, I want to share it with the world. This is one of those books, a truly moving, inspiring, fascinating, terrifying, heart-breaking and rewarding tale.
Fauziya Kassindja is a Muslim African woman raised by a father she adored who did not adhere to many of the more restrictive Islamic customs relating to women. Upon his death, however, Fauziya is faced with a forced marriage and forced female circumcision and flees first to Germany and then to the United States, where she is promptly locked away in prision, initially denied asylum and kept imprisoned for an unbelievable amount of time.
The story itself is both fascinating and heart-breaking, but Fauziya tells it with such detail and brutal honesty that it becomes even more powerful. She creates a beautiful picture of her childhood in Africa and life with her beloved father and family, and she conveys clearly and easily her naivete about laws and customs as she went first to the strange land and then to the literal and figurative prison of America. Her ambivalence about America - as the land of hope and escape turned jail - is understandable and she describes why a return to the horrors that awaited her at home suddenly seemed better than remaining in the series of prisons to which she was assigned.
What makes Fauziya such a compelling figure - a real heroine - is her honesty and her struggle to stand up for her beliefs. She personifies the adage that courage is being scared but 'doing it anyway.' I grew angrier and angrier at the way in which women are treated here and around the world, that forced mutilation is not 'political' nor grounds for asylum, that gender has such an impact on how people are treated. Her faith in her religion, her love of her family, her wish to give in despite the horror that would greet her return to Africa all made her such a human, touching figure. This is not a book to be missed - everyone should read it - but for those concerned about the treatment of women and female circumcision - and far too many women have to deal with the brutality of it - this book is absolutely essential. When I finished, I wanted to learn more about Fauziya and what happened to her. I certainly hope that she has found the happiness and peace that she so deserves.Do They Hear You When You Cry Overview

Islamic Liberation Theology: Resisting the Empire ReviewHistorian and theologian, Hamid Dabashi is forthright, organized and thorough. The introduction is a bit repetetive but, as a life-long teacher, I understand his continually bringing us back to the outline. His is the story of an ancient people whose theology/religiosity and life style are so integrated as to be inseparable. The breadth of his world view makes this book a must read. In no uncertain terms, he defines the battle between unholy global domination and all of its victims. Here is a writer who knows we can learn to co-exist as indterdependent communities promoting a sustainable planet if we can resist and overcome the power-over paradigm in which we live.
James Cone's Theology of Black Liberation, Gustavo Gutierrz and Juan Segundo's Liberation Theologies for Latin America began the conversation. Hamid Dabashi continues the dialogue by explaining the struggle of Muslims, by identifying their primary enemy, and by joining their struggle with those of the aforementioned and others to maintain the unique characteristics of their communities in a modern and cosmopolitan world as co-creators of a future with an equal, respectful, playing field.
It is impossible to do this book justice in a short review. For me, the book is an invitation to join the human race, not as dominator nor as submissive nor as a passive but interested spectator. The world needs reflective, passionate participants who believes in what is possible, who can compromise with integrity and who can tell the difference between truth and propaganda. Thank you, Mr. Dabashi.Islamic Liberation Theology: Resisting the Empire Overview

Islamic Finance in the Global Economy ReviewAfter the frustration of looking for a good book on the subject of Islamic banking and finance, I was glad I found 'Islamic finance in the global economy'. It is by far the best, most comprehensive and most readable book on the subject. The author has an encyclopedic knowledge of the subject in all its ramifications (religion, finance, economics, politics, history, etc.), yet his erudition does not stand in the way of clarity. Indeed, Warde is a superb writer, and the book can be read and enjoyed by a wide range of readers - bankers and other professionals, academics and researchers, students, etc. While the book's lucid and fluid style makes it accessible to those who are new to the subject, it will be equally valuable to those well versed in the subject: academics, experts, Shari'ah advisers (who will not doubt use it as a handy reference book). Indeed it is heavily footnoted and has a comprehensive index. As the title indicates, it is a book about Islamic finance 'in the global economy'. As such it provides a welcome departure from most books on the subject, which are really about theology, and not about the 'real world' of Islamic finance. One criticism of the book is its rather steep price. Although it is in my opinion worth every penny, the book will be out of the reach of most of its potential audience. The publisher may assume that bankers can afford it, but I feel that its potential audience is much larger: certainly all students of Islamic economics and finance will want to read it. (I assume however that there will be at some point a paperback edition.) M. Osman, LondonIslamic Finance in the Global Economy Overview

Unholy War: Terror in the Name of Islam ReviewJohn Esposito is the author of one of the very best introductions to Islam currently available, ISLAM: THE STRAIGHT PATH, and is one of the most respected Islamic scholars currently working in the US. It was with enormous excitement that I discovered that Esposito had written a book that addresses the concerns that most Americans and Europeans have in the wake of 9-11.
This book is invaluable for understanding both the variety of traditions in Islam concerning Jihad, a term which means, simply, "struggle", and not, as many in the US imagine, something akin to "war". This "struggle" is most often, as Esposito explains, spiritual than military, and he is outstanding at showing the wide variety of views concerning the forms "jihad" can take. Even for those who believe in a military "jihad" Esposito demonstrates that there are many viewpoints. He is also superb at integrating these varying understandings with the origins of Islam. One of his great achievements is in showing that just as there is enormous diversity in Christianity (just compare the beliefs of Anglicans, Southern Baptists, Mormons, Seventh Day Adventists, Roman Catholics, Russian Orthodoxy, Pentecostals, Unitarians, Jehovah Witnesses, and Presbyterians, to take merely a few Christian traditions, and the point is grasped), so also there is a vast amount of diversity in Islamic belief. He points out that the vast majority of Muslims do not countenance violence against innocent civilians. The focus, however, of this book is on that minority that embraces violence.
Esposito discusses not only traditional Islamic teachings on Jihad and the relations of Islam with non-Islamic individuals and countries, but also 20th century thinkers and activists. This was the part of the book I found most helpful. Esposito shows how the terrorists are frequently driven by a set of ideas derived from specific writers or schools of thought. The have been inculcated in specific ways of conceiving the state of Islam's relation with the rest. These thinkers have argued for a purer form of Islam, for the establishment of genuine Islamic governments in primarily Islamic countries, for the severing of cultural and economic ties with the West (even to the extent of ceasing to export oil), for the elimination of an American and European presence and influence in these countries, and for the establishment of a homeland for the Palestinian people. And, unfortunately, many--though by no means all--of these thinkers conceive it as legitimate to employ terrorist acts of violence to achieve these goals.
While UNHOLY WAR has many virtues, it does have couple of weaknesses. The weaknesses consist in the fact that for most of us, the situation with terrorism is an immensely practical issue: we want to know what can be done, what solutions exist for resolving this situation, how Muslims and Westerners can peacefully coexist on this planet. Esposito does offer a final chapter that addresses some causes for hope, primarily in the shape of paradigms within Islam itself that offer alternatives to those espoused by Osama bin Laden and his cohorts. This was the weakest part of the book, by far. The individuals that Esposito mentions have not, unfortunately, captured the imaginations of many Muslims who are engaged in the struggle to right what they see to be the wrongs inflicted on Islam by the US and European civilization. I would love for Americans and Middle Eastern Muslims to understand each other; for now, I would be content with extremists ceasing acts of terrorism and for Americans to begin addressing in concrete the Muslims very real complaints about US military presence in Saudi Arabia and the failure to respond to needs for a Palestinian homeland.
Stylistically, the book is not as well written as one might hope. The first chapter especially is sometimes a bit flat. Perhaps the desire to get this book published quickly is partly at fault for that. Nonetheless, this is a book that can be read with enormous profit. Like me, perhaps a reader will be left feeling actually less hopeful afterwards, especially after learning how widespread ultraconservative Hammadi Islam has become. But anyone reading this will definitely have a greater understanding of the intellectual underpinnings of the more radical elements of contemporary Islam.Unholy War: Terror in the Name of Islam Overview

The Missing Martyrs: Why There Are So Few Muslim Terrorists ReviewWhen Americans think of terrorism they cannot help but think of 9/11 and Al-Qaeda. Unless they have trained themselves not to, many will undoubtedly think of Islam as well. From 9/11 until recently there had been serious talk of an "Islamic terror problem": when would they strike again, and why was Islam so conducive to terror? Nowadays talk of an "Islamic terror problem" has taken a backseat to other, more pressing concerns: the economy, etc. Moreover, Bin Laden has been killed, the "Velvet Revolution" has transformed America's vision of the Islamic/Arabic world, and the comedic Peter King witch hunts have made unqualified Muslim baiting unwelcome. Still, however, we often ask ourselves why there are so many Muslim terrorists. Indeed, probably most Americans, most westerners, assumed that the recent terrorist attack in Norway was perpetrated by Muslim terrorists.
Sociologist Charles Kurzman begs to differ. On the contrary, he says; Why are there so few Muslim terrorists? With the world's Muslim population at more than one billion, Kurzman's goal in this book is to explain why the world does not witness more acts of Islamist terror. One reason is that most Muslims do not share the conviction that targeting innocent civilians is acceptable. Nevertheless, there are still terrorists, Kurzman acknowledges, but there are also many terrorist groups, which means these diverse groups do not always share the same ideology and hence cannot draw from the entire Muslim population. For example, the most general dichotomy we can distinguish is between the "globalist" and "localist" terrorists. Globalists such as Al-Qaeda are not on the same page as localists such as Hamas. Further, governments that host terrorist organizations don't always share the same nuances: the Taliban, for example, had a slightly different version of Islam than Al-Qaeda, which made Al-Qaeda's operations less easy. Essentially, this is all to say that Islam is not a monolithic religion and the Arab/Islamic world is not a two dimensional place, even when it comes to terrorism.
Kurzman also addresses the claim that anti-Americanism fuels Islamist terrorism. Kurzman notes that much Islamist terror is based on anti-American rhetoric; Bin Laden, for example, claimed that his actions were in response to American foreign policy. Since this is the case, we should be surprised at why acts of terrorist violence have not been higher, since, Kurzman says, the Arab world is full of anti-American sentiment. Should we be (or, have been) worried at the pro-Osama sentiment in the wake of 9/11? Should we be worried that Muslim kids in France have posters of Osama on their bedroom walls? No, Kurzman says, for this is just an embodiment of the "radical sheik", little different from college students who hang posters of Che Guevara on their dormroom walls. Concerning the anti-American sentiment more generally, Kurzman says that this sentiment cannot go any lower; in economics-speak, American foreign policy can do nothing to change consumer sentiment, for the way in which the Arab/Islamic world responds to our foreign policy is inelastic. Only in Turkey and Indonesia do we see a noticeable change in "consumer sentiment". In contrast, "anti-Americanism may be so entrenched that changes in U.S. foreign policy do not make much difference. In Pakistan, for example, only 23 percent of respondents expressed a favorable view of America in 2000. At this low level there wasn't much room for decline during the Bush administration. So even though favorable responses dropped by more than half in 2002, this change only amounted to 13 percent of the sample---a far smaller proportion than the 50 percent of Turks and 60 percent of Indonesians who changed their minds... during the same period."
Thus it is a little confusing when Kurzman later praises Greg Mortenson (author of Three Cups of Tea and, unfortunately for Kurzman's book, a persona non grata as of recently) as an example that U.S. foreign policy should take if it is to win the hearts and minds of the Arab and Islamic world. Also confusing are Kurzman's meanderings into various other topics such as sociological meta-theory (the theory of how to do sociology). Despite such detours, Kurzman's book is a nuanced look at Islamist terrorism, and should be read by those in policy positions. His overarching theme and the data he conveys are a valuable addition to any honest discussion about the topic at hand. The Missing Martyrs: Why There Are So Few Muslim Terrorists Overview

Shariah: The Threat To America: An Exercise In Competitive Analysis (Report of Team B II) ReviewThis is the seminal work that our nation needs. There is finally a single all-encompassing reference that details the modern Jihad threat to the Dar Al Harb (the "house of war"). It outlines the master plan being carried out by the Muslim Brotherhood to impose Shariah Law on the United States, and those people in our own government that are not only ignoring the threat, but in some cases are actually supporting the destruction of the U.S. Consitution by abdicating their professional duty to develop an appropriate national security response.
It clarifies how Islam is NOT just a religion, but an entire way of life that includes its own codified law called Shariah, which is meant to rule over the entire world and be enforced against ALL people, not just Muslims. It identifies how Shariah Law contradicts many of the protections in the Bill of Rights, and especially women's rights (specifically, such behavior as underage and forced marriages, honor killing, female genital mutilation, polygamy, and domestic abuse including marital rape--where's the National Organization for Women (NOW) when you need them?). It clarifies how senior government officials, as well as generals and admirals in the military, are failing their oath to protect and defend the Constitution. It highlights why anyone supporting Shariah in the United States is commiting sedition and treason. It identifies how the Muslim Brotherhood are secretly waging a "stealth Jihad" through scores of front organizations.
The West is led to believe that Jihad is nothing more than an "inner struggle" while there are in fact four types of Jihad: of the heart, the tongue, the pen, and the sword. The Muslim Brotherhood's plan is to settle in the West to conduct a "grand Jihad in eliminating the Western civilization from within and sabotaging its miserable house BY THEIR HANDS". Through its front organizations like the Council for American Islamic Relations (CAIR) and the Muslim Pulbic Affairs Council (MPAC), as well as dozens of others, the Muslim Brotherhood is twisting the protections of our own Constitution and using them to protect themselves behind the First Amendment while waging a very effective propaganda campaign. Ignorant Americans, and especially high-ranking government officials, are then duped into supporting the Muslim Brotherhood's efforts falsely believeing they are supporting "religious tolerance".
What many Westerners have been falsely led to believe is that "Islam is a religion of peace" when it is much more than just a religion, and it's not peaceful. This is NOT a First Amendment issue. Article 6 of the Constitution states that the Consitution shall be the law of the land. Any efforts to replace the Consitution with Shariah or any other foreign laws is seditious and treasonous. This reference outlines how current laws that were used against other seditous groups like communists during the Cold War can be applied as tools to protect our nation against Shariah.
Don't take my word for it. Read the Koran AFTER applying the Doctrine of Abrogation to its peaceful verses. And read this carefully prepared and heavily annotated analysis. Only then can one understand the true intent of Islam. To speak about Islam without having done the homework only breeds further ignorance. Prepare to become angry.Shariah: The Threat To America: An Exercise In Competitive Analysis (Report of Team B II) Overview

Leaderless Jihad: Terror Networks in the Twenty-First Century ReviewThe author once again provides an easily read and understood book about the current terrorist threat. He first provides us with a history of global terrorism and then explains how the current terrorist threat differs from terrorist threats that the world has seen in the past.
He then discusses the radicalization process that creates terrorists - this was incredibly interesting as was his explanation as to why there currently is a greater terrorist threat in Europe than the U.S. based on this radicalization process.
Further, he discusses how terrorists have been forced to use the internet as one of the primary ways to get around increased surveillance and border protection around the world. He then explains how this evolution in terrorist communication and interaction has created a "leaderless jihad" that we now face.
Finally, he concludes with well thought out recommendations concerning ways that the U.S. should consider moving forward to combat this evolving terrorist threat.
Overall - an outstanding book - a must read for anyone interested in the terrorist threat that the U.S and the world now faces.Leaderless Jihad: Terror Networks in the Twenty-First Century Overview

The Far Enemy: Why Jihad Went Global (Cambridge Middle East Studies) ReviewThere is no doubt that Islam as a religion and Islamic-Western relations as a political problem have captured the attention of everyone in the United States who is tuned into current affairs. September 11th, the worst terrorist attack in American history, and the current international war on terrorism have changed the lives of people around the globe. The search for the accused masterminds behind 9/11 and other recent attacks against Western and Western-allied targets, and the pursuit of those who are the direct perpetrators of terrorist activities, is an ongoing and very expensive enterprise.

Of particular interest are the whereabouts and capture of Osama bin Laden and his deputy Ayman al-Zawahiri, leaders of the terrorist group called Al Qaeda. For the most part, Al Qaeda has been characterized as an Islamist front united in armed struggle, or "jihad," against Western civilization and Western interests. But Fawaz A. Gerges, a noted historian and Middle East expert, has a different take on the matter and has offered his own analysis in "The Far Enemy," a book that is extremely detailed and meticulously researched.

Gerges certainly possesses the credentials needed to write a book such as this. Educated at Oxford University and the London School of Economics, he has previously been a Research Fellow at Harvard and Princeton universities, and he now holds the Christian A. Johnson Chair in International Affairs and Middle Eastern Studies at Sarah Lawrence College. Gerges has written widely on Arab and Muslim politics, Islamist movements, American foreign policy, and relations between the world of Islam and the West. His has authored several books and his articles have appeared in several of the most respected journals and newspapers in the United States, Europe, and the Middle East. He is also a senior analyst and regular commentator for ABC television news on Middle Eastern affairs.

The first question that naturally comes to one's mind is: What is meant by the "Far Enemy"? Furthermore, if there is a "far enemy," there should be a "near enemy" and who is that? I have read a great deal about Islam and the Islamic "jihad" during the past few years and never came across these terms before. Now that I am familiar with them, thanks to the author, past and current events regarding Islamic-Western tensions, and some of the events in certain Muslim-dominated nations, are better understood. To put it simply, the "far enemy" refers to the United States and its Western allies; the "near enemy" are the Muslim regimes which have been deemed "unacceptable" either for their secularization of politics and society or because, in the view of some jihadists, the religious authorities and scholars have been "subverted by corrupting Western influences."

Up until the late 1990s, according to the author, jihadists had concentrated their attention on fighting the "near enemy," that is, bringing about political and social change within Muslim nations, returning these nations to their essential Islamic religious foundation. Then, as the twenty-first century approached, some jihadists internationalized the battle and the "far enemy" became the focus of the struggle. This is the situation regarding Al Qaeda. Gerges argues that Al Qaeda is actually a minority within the jihadist movement. Moreover, it has been criticized and opposed by other jihadists, namely the religious nationalists who want to focus on changing the Muslim world rather than internationalizing the battle. These latter want to confront and change the "near enemy" and not fight the "far enemy."

One example of the above will be related here. Referring to Nageh Abdullah Ibrahim, a major theoretician of the jihadist organization called the Islamic Group who is currently serving a life sentence in Egypt, Gerges states: "...Ibrahim and other imprisoned Islamic Group leaders fault Al Qaeda for ignoring reality and living in its own bubble. They go after bin Laden with a vengeance, accusing him of shutting his eyes and ears and blindly plunging forward, bringing the temple down on his own head the ummah's as well."

Gerges continues: "Ibrahim says that had bin Laden paid adequate attention to his humble capabilities, he would have refrained from declaring war on the world, but the issue is bigger than that because bin Laden has lost touch with reality, rationality, and religious precepts. As a result, Ibrahim adds, Al Qaeda caused the downfall of two Muslim regimes -- in Kabul and Baghdad -- and Arab states have faced the brunt of the American armada. In short, Al Qaeda is no longer an intact, cohesive organization because it confuses myth with fact and entertains strange ideas. Ibrahim compares Al Qaeda with the Saddam Hussein regime and implies that bin Laden could bring about the destruction of his network like Hussein did to the Iraqi state."

Those who think that the jihadists constitute a unified movement in complete agreement about who is the real adversary and the strategies to be employed in defeating it are in error, according to Gerges. This whole issue is far more complex than most Western observers think. There has been a rift, largely ignored by the West, between those Islamic jihadists who are interested in promoting global terrorism, going after the "far enemy," and those who want to concentrate on the "near enemy." This rift, says Gerges, led to the events of September 11 and has dominated developments ever since.

According to Gerges, the West must understand this: "...the war against transnationalist jihadis cannot be won on the battlefield in either Afghanistan or Iraq; this is not a conventional war in which two armies confront each other and emerge victorious or vanquished. One of the arguments advanced in the book is that the most effective means to put Al Qaeda out of business is to complete its encirclement and siege internally; there is overwhelming evidence pointing in that direction: bin Laden and his associates have lost the war for Muslim minds."

This is a very complex, detailed work based on firsthand field research, interviews, primary documents, and letters. Not, however, your leisure-time reading. The Far Enemy: Why Jihad Went Global (Cambridge Middle East Studies) Overview

Wahhabi Islam: From Revival and Reform to Global Jihad ReviewNatana J. Delong-Bas's book, "Wahhabi Islam: From Revival and Reform to Global Jihad," which purportedly explains Wahhabism "accurately" and dispels "myths" propagated by "polemics" of all colors, media pundits and all, is a rather welcome contribution - or so it seems, at first glance. The three-page Introduction portrayed several people - including Stephen Schwartz (footnote 1,7,9,11), Khaled Abou El Fadl (footnote 3), and myself (footnote 6) -- as examples of misinformed individuals, in the least, who portrayed Wahhabism inaccurately in their works. To the author, their anti-Wahhabi rhetoric, like many others, flew in the face of the facts that she allegedly gathered in her more than 300 pages of research, much of it translated into English for the first time. Delong-Bas's point: Wahhabism just isn't the scary monster it is said to be. Maybe it really was a "pathbreaking" (Oxford Press), "groundbreaking" (John L. Esposito), endeavor, I thought.
Could the portrayal of Wahhabism as intolerant and fanatical by hundreds, maybe thousands, of Muslim and non-Muslim scholars, authors, activists, students, etc. in 200+ years past be flawed? Should their positions be construed merely as a load of sophisticated/polemical gobbledygook? Does the author really open "the way for historians to reconsider and revise the standard, perhaps mistaken, notions about it" (David Commins)? One need not go to far into the book to answer such questions. Because of the author's main sources, the book fails miserably as a work of diligent scholarship.
In the Preface,Delong-Bas says: "Thanks are due to Faisal bin Salman, Abd Allah S. al-Uthaymin, and Dr. Fahd al-Semmari, Director of the King Abd al-Aziz Foundation for Research and Archives, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for making the full corpus of Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab's works available to me [...]." This same research foundation was also one of three sources that provided "financial support" for her book. What follows is a brief description of who the author is thanking.
The Foundation is named after King Abd al-Aziz (1902-1953), the Wahhabi founder of Saudi Arabia who slaughtered non-Wahhabi Muslims (and even Wahhabi Muslims of the Ikhwan) in his path to "victory".
Abd Allah S. al-Uthaymin, a Wahhabi, is the author of "History of Saudi Arabia: From the Movement Reformer Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab to King Abd al-Aziz."
Faisal bin Salman, known as "H.R.H. (His Royal Highness)" in Saudi Arabia, is one of the princes of the Wahhabi Al-Sa'ud monarchy. Somehow, Delong-Bas (Oxford Press?) did not add the "H.R.H." acronym before the prince's name in the Preface -obviously a part of the book read by many. However, she remembered to add the acronym in a tiny-lettered footnote #8 (Introduction) hidden well in the back of the book that few readers would perhaps bother to read. Why did Delong-Bas/Oxford Press do this? Were they trying to hide something?
Dr. Fahd al-Semmari, a Wahhabi, was deputy secretary of the kingdom's 100th Anniversary Committee, in addition to his current role as general director of the King Abd al-Aziz Foundation for Research and Archives. The foundation's mandate is to glorify the heritage of Saudi Arabia, including Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab who is a part of the heritage.
On page 14, Delong-Bas states the four main sources of biographical information of Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab:
(1) contemporary chronicles written by his supporters, the most important of whom were Husayn Ibn Ghannam and Uthman Ibn Bishr; (2) polemical works written by his opponents, the most important of whom was Ahmad bin Zayni Dahlan; (3) accounts written by Western travelers to Arabia; and (4) Ibn Abd al-Wahhab's own written works.
She then says, "Of all of these accounts, the chronicles contain the most biographical information and are considered to be the most accurate in terms of biographical information because of the proximity of the writers to their subjects."
Does close proximity to Ibn Abd al-Wahhab/"subjects" necessarily mean the sources will be the "most accurate in terms of biographical information"? Common sense says no because Ibn Ghannam and Ibn Bishr are clearly stated to be Ibn Abd al-Wahhab's "supporters". It's like contacting a pro-Nazi foundation for a biography of Adolph Hitler, and portraying sources by Hitler's admirers as the "most accurate" because they were among the closest in "proximity" to him. Is there not a high possibility that Ibn Abd al-Wahhab's "supporters" mainly focused on his peaceful biographical aspects, and concealed his more extremist/jihadist aspects? Is it not possible that they, like any other supporter, would care to cast the biography of a man they like in a positive manner than in a negative manner? Common sense, again, says: In all likelihood.
There is, in fact, a high probability of inaccuracy from those sources, though this somehow escapes Delong-Bas's mind. Moreover, according to my count, the author has footnoted Ibn Ghannam only 4 times, but Ibn Bishr no less than 45 times, meaning that the bulk of "most accurate" biographical information of Ibn Abd al-Wahhab comes almost entirely from one source - again, from a pro-Wahhabi. How, then, can Ibn Abd al-Wahhab's biography, as presented in Delong Bas's book, be taken seriously by any objective scholar? It cannot.
While pro-Wahhabis are used as "most accurate" sources, information from Wahhabi opponents "has not been used extensively" because they (1) are "extremely polemical in style rather than factual or straightforward"; (2) they address "later developments" of the Wahhabi movement; and (3) "because of their polemical nature, these accounts tend to be more useful in reconstructing impressions of the movement than in recounting events or teachings." And that's why "polemical works have been largely discarded" in giving the biography of Ibn Abd al-Wahhab and the "early teachings of the movement."
But what makes the sources of two Wahhabi supporters more accurate than the works of Wahhabi opponents? While the former are closer in time to Ibn Abd al-Wahhab, they are his biased supporters. The latter, however, though further away in time from the Wahhabi founder's period of existence, may - and indeed, do - have accurate information, especially on how Ibn Abd al-Wahhab's teachings contradicted the teachings that orthodox Sunni Muslims had been following for over 1,000 years.
For example, Delong-Bas provides Ibn Abd al-Wahhab's interpretations of intercession (tawassul) in his "Kitab al-Tawhid" without stating that he contradicted many verses of the Qur'an, hadeeth, and interpretations provided by Sunni orthodox scholars (ulema) throughout the history of Islam (except Ibn Taymiyah and his followers who were the first to deviate from mainstream Sunni Islam on the issue). With an unorthodox interpretation of a genuinely valid Islamic practice, Ibn Abd al-Wahhab accuses the vast lot of Muslims who do 'tawassul' of committing polytheism (shirk) -- the only unforgivable sin in Islam. He then allows his followers to massacre them, believing that they are doing a very noble deed and following the footsteps of the Prophet Muhammad when, in fact, they are doing exactly the opposite.
From a source perspective, how, to any basic researcher, can this book be called a "pathbreaking" and "groundbreaking" work when sources for a book on Wahhabism are provided by Wahhabis, when the sources themselves are written by Wahhabis, and when the research endeavor is partially financed by Wahhabis? I'm sure you see how "objective" and "balanced" Delong-Bas's research is.
Contact me by e-mail for a more detailed unveiling of Delong-Bas's pseudo-scholarship and insult to the moderate/orthodox Muslims. (...)

Brave New War: The Next Stage of Terrorism and the End of Globalization ReviewFor anyone involved in strategic planning, security, financial markets, energy infrastructure, scenario planning, transportation or communications networking, this book is a must-read. For those of us who follow his work at the GlobalGuerrillas blog, much of the information is familiar, but presented here in book form, the many strands of thought that make up the concept come together effectively.
In short, modern communications technology and complex infrastructure make it much easier for small groups to "hollow out" a state. These groups usually don't want to take over a government, they just want to make the state weak so they can get on with their goals of smuggling, ethnic violence, or other profitable criminal activies. This ability to leverage violence and the inability of most to understand the goals of these groups will loom large in policy circles in the future.
This is the kind of book that sparks a lot of further reading and research, in my opinion. Mr. Robb is taking concepts from war, commerce and communications and making a useful model from them. This concept will be useful for families, corporations and countries.
If you want to understand the concepts that will define debate about war, insurgency, globalization and society in the coming decades, buy a copy of this book. If you are low on cash, skip a few lunches and save up the money. It is worth it.Brave New War: The Next Stage of Terrorism and the End of Globalization Overview

The Global Resurgence of Religion and the Transformation of International Relations: The Struggle for the Soul of the Twenty-First Century (Culture and Religion in International Relations) Review"The Global Resurgence of Religion and the Transformation of International Relations" not only counts the global resurgence of faith to be authentic but also counts it as integral to public life. Instead of buying into a whole-sale rejection of faith, this book suggests that we need to rethink religion on the basis of the empirical evidence presented to us in globalization. This question actually challenges a great deal of liberal theories of religion that would have us believe the faith is something that stops-up the political process rather than promotes it. I think that Thomas's insight into how religion has offered transnational identities to those marginalized peoples of the world is important and begs for more attention. In response to the first review given of this book I would also add that 'faith identities' are far from static, but are living traditions in which people participate and transform. It is not as though faith only transforms politics but politics has also transformed faith--they inform each other. This view would suggest that the influence of faith in global politics might open up new areas of conversation and promote better relationships, relationships that are built on respect for each other's faith/political situation. I highly doubt that this is an unpromising investigation! The Global Resurgence of Religion and the Transformation of International Relations: The Struggle for the Soul of the Twenty-First Century (Culture and Religion in International Relations) Overview

Now They Call Me Infidel: Why I Renounced Jihad for America, Israel, and the War on Terror Review"Now They Call Me Infidel - Why I Renounced Jihad for America, Israel and the War on Terror" by Nonie Darwish, A Muslim Shahid's Daughter
Nonie Darwish's entrancing and frightening account of her childhood and upbringing in the 50's, 60's and 70's Middle East gives the reader an opportunity to see the build up of jihad and the perpetuation of hatred towards Israel and America at a very personal level. Her status as a Shahid's (Martyr's) daughter and being of the upper class in Egyptian Society allowed her access to the media and therefore information from the outside world that most did not share. Her early years were spent in Gaza where her father was a high ranking member of Nasser's Egyptian Army. She was taught hatred and prejudice towards the Jews and Israel and the passion for jihad as early as elementary school. She was told not to accept candy from strangers on the street because it could be a Jew who wants to poison Arab children. She was told that Jews love to kill Arab children and use their blood in their cookies. Nonie did not buy in to the hate speech and ugliness of the propaganda that is spread throughout Muslim countries. After her father was killed by a package bomb from Israel, her mother, Nonie and four siblings moved to Egypt. She couldn't understand, even at a young age, why President Nasser asked of her and her siblings, "Which of you will kill Jews in retaliation of your father's death?" She did not want to kill Jews. She speaks of Egypt, her country of origin, as being more westernized than other countries in the Middle East. When she was growing up, most women did not wear the veil. There was still polygamy and she had heard tales of female circumcision. But, her mother sent them to private, Christian schools to get the best education and she was able to purchase a car and obtain a driver's license to get them to school. Ms. Darwish's education at the American University of Cairo introduced her to diversity and open discussion. She was amazed that the average Egyptian thought that Egypt had always been Muslim, even when the pyramids were built. They never knew that Israel was inhabited by Jews for centuries before Muhammad was born. The Arab media and Dictators had been lying to their people for generations now. She was able to "escape" to the U.S. where her personality finally found a home. She took several years to raise a family and settle in Los Angeles. Nonie tells of a time she took a visiting family friend to a mosque in her neighborhood. She was embarrassed by the hate speech in the mosques even then. According to Ms. Darwish many Muslims in America do not attend mosques because the local Imams are spreading anti-American propaganda and encourage jihad. She felt the Jihad was coming to America. Most of the Mosques in America are built and supported by Saudi Arabia. When the Jihadists flew into the World Trade Center and into the Pentagon and that field in Pennsylvania Nonie called her family and friends in Egypt. All of them denied it was Islamic Terrorists. They said it was an Israeli plot. She was even admonished for not being a good Muslim and blaming the attacks on Muslim Terrorists. She pointed out to them that Mohammed Atta was Egyptian and they responded with anger that Nonie would not defend her culture of origin. After 9/11 Nonie felt compelled to speak out against the Jihadist movement. Now she speaks around the world and on college campuses to refute the hate coming out of the Muslim world towards Israel and the West. She has organized a group, Arabs for Israel, to open a venue for Arabs who do support Israel's democracy in the Middle East. This book is one brave woman's story of life in a repressed society and her escape to the freedom loving United States. Her insight into Arab culture is invaluable. There needs to be more voices, women's voices coming from these cultures so we can shine a light on the injustice and persecution still being applied to people in these countries today.
Her writing style is not aggressive or combative. Her love of the Egyptian people and the beauty that the diverse Arab culture has given the world is evident in her chapters. She simply deplores the hateful rhetoric and violent methods Islamists are endorsing. She hopes for peace for everyone in this life. Ms. Darwish was able to write her life story because she has been living in the United States for over 25 years now. She is a U.S. citizen; she has the courage of her convictions and the freedom of speech behind her now.

Cruel and Usual Punishment: The Terrifying Global Implications of Islamic Law ReviewDarwish's unique background enables her to clearly explain Islam to the Western reader. Although I read a few books on Islam after 9/11, this was the first description that enabled me to understand why there was not more outrage from moderate Muslims and religious leaders when thousands of American civilians were murdered in Islam's name.
An important part of the understanding began with Darwish's explanation that Islam is not just a religion -- It is also a political and legal system. Darwish supports this assertion with scriptural statistics as well as concrete examples. Identifying political Islam helped this reader to consider it more objectively. Like many others, it is difficult for me to criticize another's religion (even silently in my own mind), but it is not hard to criticize a political or legal system that oppresses people. Thus, I could not reconcile 9/11 or dehumanization with religious Islam, but I can easily see how political Islam encourages such abuses.
Darwish spent her first thirty years in Egypt and understands that "Most Muslims judge Islam by their kind, tolerant Muslim grandparents who prayed five times every day." But this did not prevent her from seeing extreme human rights abuses enforced through Sharia - which is now declared by forty-five Muslim countries to override the United Nation's Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
She points out that while Westerners generally assume all religions encourage a respect for the dignity of each individual, Islamic law (Sharia) teaches that non-Muslims should be subjugated or killed in this world. Peace and prosperity for one's children is not as important as assuring that Islamic law rules everywhere in the Middle East and eventually in the world.
While Westerners tend to think that all religions encourage some form of the golden rule, Sharia teaches two systems of ethics - one for Muslims and another for non-Muslims. Building on tribal practices of the seventh century, Sharia encourages the side of humanity that wants to take from and subjugate others.
While Westerners tend to think in terms of religious people developing a personal understanding of and relationship with God, Sharia advocates executing people who ask difficult questions that could be interpreted as criticism. It's hard to imagine, that in this day and age, Islamic scholars agree that those who criticize Islam or choose to stop being Muslim should be executed. Sadly, while talk of an Islamic reformation is common and even assumed by many in the West, such murmurings in the Middle East are silenced through intimidation.
While Westerners are accustomed to an increase in religious tolerance over time, Darwish explains how petrodollars are being used to grow an extremely intolerant form of political Islam in her native Egypt and elsewhere. The statistics she cites are chilling.
In addition to describing Sharia, Darwish warns of the threat to the west and offers policy prescriptions for political leaders and voters. Nonie Darwish is clearly an immigrant whose unusual perspective enriches our culture. This reader is grateful that she risks her life to publicly speak in defense of her adopted country.Cruel and Usual Punishment: The Terrifying Global Implications of Islamic Law Overview
