American Indian Liberation: A Theology of Sovereignty ReviewGeorge Tinker has once again thoroughly researched and written on the topic of European colonialism as pertaining to the American Indian. For anyone who is a novice to this topic they will find the material very informative. For those who are well versed in the issue of colonialism as pertains to the American Indian it is another review. I was especially impressed with Tinker's review of South American Liberation Marxist Theology (taken up by the Jesuits)as a deficient methodology for solving the 500 year problem of Indigenous poverty and loss of land due to its basis in violent reaction and revolution. Liberation theology in South America as taken up by the Roman Catholic Church when turning violent has only masked the underlying problem of a privileged class still impoverishing the underclass. I don't know if I agree that Christianity has lost its voice entirely in regard to offering a solution to the problem but certainly institutional models of Christianity that promote more of the same can be criticized. However, the idea that individual American Christians with a radicalized Christology can make a difference in partnerships with Native peoples is indicated as a solution by Tinker if the theology is first radicalized by Natives in their context first. Sovereignty as a core issue in determining a Native Christology seems to be the moral imperative for Tinker who is not willing to acquiese to Euro-American theological models as the starting point for dialogue. There might be a rub there in dialogue so there is wonderment about how a dialogue would ensue with this attitude. However, the suspension of judgement on both Native and Euro-American attitudes needs further treatment as successful dialogue in these matters can only be achieved with the suspension of judgement on both sides. The book needs a better treatment on what theologian Philip Yancey calls "dual nature of suffering" wherein the collective suffering of a people is bound up with their oppressors and therefore, the collective healing is also bound up at some point but Tinker does not give this axiom sufficient treatment. The entire thesis of Native people's determining their own Christology apart from Euro-American constructs and imput may have limitations as Euro-Christian models and methodology have already been ingrained, adopted and practiced for centuries in Native North American populations and to reject any Euro-American methodology as already practiced by Christianized Native Americans could exclude them from the dialogue and make them feel unwelcome. A better treatment of exactly where all the differing Native tribes in North America are at would have been helpful as there seems to be a generalized review that does not indicate for instance where certain tribes are at on this subject and the decisions they have made to incorporate certain Christian traditions in blending them with their own Native practices. This practice appears to be called assimilation by Tinker and yet that could be offensive to certain Native people who have on their own terms successfully blended their Native belief and practice with Christianity. To indicate that Native people who have adopted certain Christian beliefs are oppressed by colonialism could be construed as offensive for those who have determined their own Christology by such a practice of blending on their own Native terms.American Indian Liberation: A Theology of Sovereignty Overview

Rawls (The Routledge Philosophers) ReviewI admit that I wasn't certain that Samuel Freeman's book on Rawls would be terrific. Two reasons. First, it is very long, and I imagined that a good introductory text would be less than 462 pages long (514 incl. glossary and notes). Second, although I'm a huge admirer of Freeman as a philosopher, all his work that I'd previously read is aimed squarely at scholars; he works on exceedingly difficult questions, makes complicated arguments, and although the pay off is always, in my experience, more than worth the effort, I never expect undergraduates, for example, to be able to make that effort.
But this book is a triumph. A brilliantly careful, utterly transparent, account of Rawls's thought and an admirable presentation of the state of the debates around Rawls's work. Forcing students to read Rawls is the right thing to do; but I shall never again force them to read him without providing Freeman's text as indispensable help.
When I started reading it I was in the midst of a glut of work, and kept trying to put it down so I could get on with things, but couldn't. It is, as it should be at this length, comprehensive--chapters on each of the two principles, on the OP, on the basic structure, and a wonderfully clear chapter on the importance of stability, and what it is that stability consists in. Then a chapter on Kantian constructivism, which really helped illuminate (for me, at least, but I have always been unsure about this) the relationship between the Dewey lectures and the later work, two chapters on political liberalism and one on the Law of Peoples. I guess the book is intended primarily as a companion in a comprehensive course on Rawls's work--read all three main books, and Freeman's so that the students can tell what is going on. But the first six chapters alone justify the (low) price of the book (so it is useable alongside A Theory of Justice or Justice as Fairness alone) and I can't imagine teaching Rawls to undergraduates again without using it. I fyou read Rawls in college, and feel like revisiting him, use Freeman's book alongside it. Highly recommended.Rawls (The Routledge Philosophers) Overview

Social Justice Handbook: Small Steps for a Better World (Bridgeleader Books) ReviewIf you are interested in effectively influencing others to take action on issues of social action, then I would highly recommend "Social Justice Handbook: Small Steps For A Better World" by Mae Elise Cannon. I am not familiar with any other resource of this kind. Cannon provides a comprehensive guide to the topic of social justice that is not only rooted in Scripture, but is replete with tangible ways to pursue justice through the local church.
The handbook is divided into two main parts. Part one, which includes five chapters, titled "Foundations of Social Justice," is meant to provide a biblical and theological framework for justice, and addresses how individuals and churches can get involved.
Chapter one, "God's Heart for Justice," is a broad view of the theological foundation for social justice. Chapter two focuses on definitions and questions about social justice. Chapter three, provides a history of Christian social justice in the United States. Chapter four addresses the process people must embark on to allow their hearts to be opened and broken toward those who are most affected by injustice and oppression. And chapter five focuses on the roles individuals, church, community and government can play in advocating social justice.
While each of the chapters are excellent, my favorite is chapter four. In it Cannon shares a very helpful process of moving people from apathy to advocacy, that I believe has broad implications for ministry. She writes:
"Though social justice cannot be simplified to a step-by-step program, I have identified nine components to be consistently helpful in the movement from apathy to advocacy: prayer, awareness, lament, repentance, partnership and community, sacrifice, advocacy, evangelism, and celebration. Sometimes these elements happen in a linear progression, sometimes they happen simultaneously, and at other times they are cyclical. In any case, they are part of the ongoing process of personal transformation and spiritual growth toward Christlikeness."
Part two, "Social Justice Issues," is arranged alphabetically and includes more than eighty justice "topics." This section of the book is designed to be both a reference guide and a reflective tool. Cannon has included multiple ministry profiles, spiritual reflection and awareness exercises, and simple (not easy) action steps. Lastly, the book includes a wonderful set of appendixes, that include organizations, books and movies that deal with a variety of justice issues.
I appreciate the words of Gilbert Bilezikian as he sums up his recommendation of this resource: "The moment you open Social Justice Handbook, it will vibrate in your hands with the heart-passion that inspired its making, a passion generated by him who described his life-mission as bringing good news to the poor, release to captives, sight to the blind, freedom to the oppressed and the time of God's grace."Social Justice Handbook: Small Steps for a Better World (Bridgeleader Books) Overview
