The Myths of August: A Personal Exploration of Our Tragic Cold War Affair with the Atom ReviewAn interesting perspective on the Cold War and our exploration of atomic power. Written by Stewart Udall, the Secretary of the Interior under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson.
My daughter purchased this for me, and although not something I would normally read, it turned out to be an enjoyable and educational use of my time. I disagree with most of what Mr. Udall has to say regarding the Cold War, but he does point out many troubling events as we learned how to deal with the awesome power and danger inherent to atomic energy and "the bomb".
If you believe that dropping the atomic bomb on Japan was a criminal act, that Khrushchev was one of the architects of the downfall of the Soviet Union and Reagan was just a cowboy who almost brought on Armageddon but lucked out when the wall fell, then you will enjoy this book.
The author views Gorbachev as "the preeminent peacemaker of the twentieth century" and essentially says that Communism got a bad rap because Stalin was so mean. The true evil, according to Udall, was Ronald Reagan's "disastrous misjudgments in the last decade of the Cold War".
I suspect this book would be a favorite on the moonbat reading list.

Deep Ecology for the Twenty-First Century ReviewThe first words of this venerable and very important anthology of seminal papers in environmental ethics are these: "The Long-Range Deep Ecology movement emerged more or less spontaneously and informally as a philosophical and scientific social/political movement during the so-called Ecological revolution of the 1960's. Its main concern has been to bring about a paradigm shift - a shift in perception, values, and lifestyles - as a basis for redirecting the ecologically destructive path of modern industrial growth societies. Since the 1960's, the long-range Deep Ecology movement has been characterized philosophically by a move from anthropocentrism to ecocentrism, and by environmental activism."
I cite this passage because, sadly, the international corporate hegemony, its paid political operatives, and multifarious media mouthpieces have done such a deceitfully effective job of at once clouding the real issue of our desperately precarious environmental situation and reinforcing our wholly unnecessary dependence of non-renewable energy resources to the tune of record profits, that there are many people coming of age in the most literate societies in the world, who have no idea of what Deep Ecology is, not to mention such a basic distinction as that between anthropocentrism to ecocentrism. Actually, I would say that the vast majority of the planet's population is either ignorant of this distinction or acts in feigned ignorance or ignorance-based denial of it. The idea that our ultimate nurturing and sustaining parent is the Earth, that we live on borrowed time, that our first responsibility in any sort of act is consideration of our responsibility to stewardship of this planet, is generally far from most people's minds when they do act. From radical (and radically unnecessary) clear-cut to all-too common litter, as a humanity, we obviously don't get it.
The corporate think-tank seems to produce an never ending stream of ongoing rationalizations and euphemistically-coated rationales for the relentless wholesale destruction of the only home we have, and we embrace, however unwillingly in some cases, but generally unconsciously in most, the systems which enable this unremitting and mindless extirpation of the root of life to go on.
Thus, a bit of re-education on the subject, the philosophical justifications for the ecocentric worldview, might be in order. I can think of no better place to start than the 39 papers in Deep Ecology for the 21st Century, which discuss this need for a shift in our thinking as a humanity in depth.
The book is divided into five sections: What is Deep Ecology?; Historical Roots of Deep Ecology; Arne Naess on Deep Ecology and Ecosophy; Deep Ecology and Eco-Feminism, Social Ecology, the Greens, and the New Age; Wilderness, The Wild, and Conservation Biology; Toward the Twenty-First Century and Beyond: Social and Practical Implications. The book focuses particularly on work of Arne Naess (12 entries) and Gary Snyder (3 entries), two foundational voices deeply rooted in vertices in the philosophical matrix of the position.
Two of my favorite entries in this book, for various reasons, are:
1) Stephan Bodian's interview with Arne Naess, "Simple in Means, Rich in Ends" (1982) "... technology is more helpless than ever before because the technology being produced doesn't fulfill basic human needs, such as meaningful work and meaningful environment. Technical progress is sham progress because the term `technical progress' is a cultural, not a technical term. Our culture is the only one in the history of humankind in which the culture has adjusted itself to the technology rather than visa-versa." "The material standard of living should be reduced and the quality of life, in the sense of basic satisfaction in the depths of one's heart or soul, should be maintained or increased." "All the sciences are fragmentary and incomplete in relation to basic rules and norms, so it's very shallow to think that science can solve our problems. Without basic norms, there is no science. Of course, we need science ..." "A hill is never the same in a repetitious way! The development of sensitivity toward the good things of which there are enough is the true goal of education. Not that we need to limit our goals. I'm not for the simple life, except in the sense of a life simple in means but rich in goals and values." One is led to ask if environmentally exploitative corporate capitalists do not have goals and values as well? Then, while we are, at least, conscious of the possibility of choice, we evidently should focus more on what our goals and values are, why they are what they are, and what are their ultimate ramifications for us? These are fundamental questions, religious questions, if you will, but we rarely ask them directly of ourselves or in a public forum.
2) Wayland Drew's study of anti-utopian fiction, "Killing Wilderness" (1972) "Specifically ... a technological society will be totalitarian regardless of what political structures permit its development, for the essence of technique is efficiency and the autonomous individual, apt to be skeptical, irrational, and recalcitrant, is inefficient. For the general good therefore, the dangerous elements of individuality must be suppressed, and man must be severed from all the spiritual, intellectual, and emotional influences which might promote dissent. Man's integrity must be broken. He must be fragmented and reshaped to participate contentedly in the smooth functioning of the technological State - a State that is fundamentally inimical to his instinct and insulting to his intellect. In other words, the nature of man must be changed." The corporation (as a legal entity or form) is the instrument of that fragmentation and change, and its will, the dictates of the State. "In its mystery and diversity, in exuberance, decay, and fecundity, the perfection of the wilderness contrasts with the sterile and static perfection of the State. The difference between them is that between existence and life, between predictability and chance, between posturing and action. Wilderness ... will threaten the totalitarian state while they co-exist, for the separation of man from nature is imperfect so long as man might recognize that a separation has occurred." "While we are able to do so, let us note the distinction. A park is a managerial unit definable in quantitative and pragmatic terms. Wilderness is unquantifiable. Its boundaries are vague or nonexistent, its contents unknown, its inhabitants elusive. The purpose of parks is use; the earmark of wilderness is mystery. Because they serve technology, parks tend toward the predictable and static, but wilderness is infinitely burgeoning and changing because it is the matrix of life itself. When we create parks we bow to increased bureaucracy and surveillance, but when we speak for wilderness we recognize our right to fewer strictures and greater freedom. Regulated and crowded, parks will eventually fragment us, as they fragment the wilderness which makes us whole."
There are hundreds of other crucial observations in this monumental collection. My one plaint is that the eloquence of great Petra Kelley is not represented. Hopefully, this unfortuanate omission of the slain sister of all Greens will be emended in a future printing or sequel volume, which is overdue. However, these are the decisive early testaments. Please heed them.Deep Ecology for the Twenty-First Century Overview

Saving Kyoto ReviewIf you're looking for an on-the-ground look at one major environmental struggle, "Saving Kyoto" will explain, identify the issues and tell you the consequences of failing to follow the guidelines.
Two economics professors, Graciela Chichilnisky, who worked on the carbon market aspect of the protocols process, and Kristen A. Sheeran, who writes about environmental issues, outline the protocols, which were established by a UN agency and designed to counter climate change and limit the creation of greenhouse gases.
The protocols were first adopted in 1997 and since have achieved acceptance, at varying levels, in about 187 countries. By accepting the protocols, countries agree to lower emissions, through various tactics and policies.
They tell readers about the key players, some of the political battles that led up to the agreement, and the struggles between the rich and poor nations to achieve the goals and assure fair treatment.
This is a sober book, designed to influence people with pure facts, not rhetoric, and to show people the deep science of the economics that underlie the effort to clean up the environment. Though written by two academic experts, its style is easy to understand, if a little on the dull side. You won't walk away ready to man the barricades, but you will be much better informed, and alarmed.

Radical Simplicity: Small Footprints on a Finite Earth ReviewMerkel is a gentle soul whose moment of truth came when he saw the Exxon Valdez disaster on TV. Realizing his lifestyle contributed directly to this sort of environmental destruction and a host of other world problems, he set out to do something about it. Travels in Kerala (in India) and among the Chumash taught him how to live a simpler life with less waste, fewer things, and greater connections to the land and people. As he reduced the environmental stress that his life caused, he also found that his life became less stressed.
But he doesn't leave it at that. He's an engineer, and he gives you the analytical tools he used to evaluate the effects of his lifestyle on the world. First the bad news: if you make more than $10,000 a year or have more than one child, you're almost certainly using more than your share of Earth's resources (pages 70 and 84), which contributes to starvation and extinction. Now the good news: using tools borrowed from two other books (Your Money or Your Life and Our Ecological Footprint), Merkel shows how you can take charge of the flows of material in your life. He walks you through examples such as the environmental cost of e-mail vs. snail-mail (in his case, snail-mail had the smaller footprint; in my case, e-mail did).
Let's face it, the process of coming to terms with your own plunder of the world is stressful: a combination of accounting and soul-searching. But the end goal is a sustainable relationship with nature and a simpler, less stressful life. Radical simplicity provides the tools you need to get started.Radical Simplicity: Small Footprints on a Finite Earth Overview

Territories of Difference: Place, Movements, Life, Redes (a John Hope Franklin Center Book) ReviewThis is a complex book and takes on the intersection of development conservation history, social movements and political narrative in one of the most difficult places to work, Colombia. It is one of those books that really rewards a careful reading and re-reading. But most importantly it illuminates a huge dynamic of development that is rooted in social movements that is having extraordinary impact in Latin America, and integrates it with globalization and the politics of nature.
Its very clearly written but the topic is demanding. Students can really see what political ecology is about in this amazing volume.
If you want to understand how the tropical future will work, this is the book to read.

Living in the Environment: Principles, Connections, and Solutions Review1. I bought the book used for college course at a great $40 price with some cosmetic wear and tear and who cares - it was not bought as an art investment, just a text book.
2. Definitely a worthwhile book to read, however (and here comes the rub) authors Miller and Spoolman (I suspect Miller is the heavy weight of the two) occassionally depart from dispassionate science. They aer not impartial and have some very big axes to grind. Also, the writing style needs reflects their missionary zeal. It is not tight, concise, and antiseptic. Implicitly they are looking for converts.
3. An example (the cheap shot): they are happy to apply models of species origination, growth, evolution, decline, and ultimate extinction to the animal and plant kindom as a whole, BUT, they are squeamish in applying these frameworks DISPASSIONATELY to homo sapien. Good science is dispassionate and Miller and Spoolman are anything but.Living in the Environment: Principles, Connections, and Solutions Overview

Water Security: The Water-Food-Energy-Climate Nexus ReviewWater is the most vital resource to continued prosperity. "Water Security: The Water-Food-Energy-Climate Nexus" discusses the incredible importance of water in our future, and how water form the roots of many other important aspects of continued existence. In the near future, water will become more and more scarce, and acting now in both a political and environmental front is needed to make sure our supply never completely dwindles, leading to catastrophic results. Securing water for the future as such has become an incredibly important aspect in today's intentional discourse, and "Water Security" proves an educated and very highly recommended read.

The Forgiving Air: Understanding Environmental Change, Second Edition ReviewDo you know that the atmosphere remembers our past behavior? And there is a limit to the forgiveness of the air. Another popular question is whether we can say that people are changing the climate? The actual language on the December 1995 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports is that "The balance of evidence suggests that there is a discernible human influence on global climate." Another common question is that suppose human beings are warming the Earth, what should we do? Richard C.J. Somerville's "The Forgiving Air: Understanding Environmental Change" suggests the following: (1) stabilizing and reducing emissions of greenhouse gases, (2) developing renewable forms of energy, and (3) protecting the atmosphere. The world population is another factor.

My primary interest on the book is weather computing. According to the author, computing weather is a calculus problem. To be specific, it is an initial value problem. Many problems involving calculus are too complicated to be solved exactly. Fortunately, there exists method to find an approximate solution.

We can predict weather for three days or up to a week now. The limit on weather prediction is about three weeks due to the system is sensitive dependence on initial conditions. Thunderstorms and hurricanes are still too small to be resolved by the weather model's grids. A weather service would reduce the grid size of its model for better predictions when a faster computer is available. But models are not yet realistic enough to reproduce droughts or monsoons.
Predicting climate is a new field. We don't even know what is predictable. Climate prediction may be a boundary-value problem. Anyway, temperature is the single most important indicator to represent all the complexity and severity of climate change. However, scientific research is time consuming. On the other hand, the second edition of the book is available. There may be good news on predicting climate.

Beyond the Limits: Confronting Global Collapse, Envisioning a Sustainable Future ReviewThis book contains more common sense, wisdom and compassion than any I've read in many years. It challenges the prevailing paradigm of our society with a perfect balance of head and heart. I borrowed a copy from a friend and I've now come to Amazon to buy my own copy, which I will urge all my friends to read. Another reviewer from Virginia seems to think the book should have been more technical. I think s/he is completely missing the point. This is a book for lay people, which it should be, because if it was full of equations only a handful of geeks would read it and it wouldn't change anything. As it is it's written in beautifully clear prose and you don't need any technical training to follow it.Beyond the Limits: Confronting Global Collapse, Envisioning a Sustainable Future Overview

The Discovery of Global Warming (New Histories of Science, Technology, and Medicine) ReviewAn excellent short summary of the rise of global climate concerns in the scientific, political and public awareness. Weart details the steps in the discovery of global warming as a concept, including the various transformations that climate theory went through on its way towards adequately explaining what has happened in the past and reliably predicting the general shape of things to come. He explains the science well for the beginner (that is to say, not too deeply) and covers many bases - including solar, atmospheric, oceanic and biomass inputs that shape our climate and the creeping realization that climate change can change (and has changed in the past) much faster than anyone suspected 100 years ago.
While covering the science and history in some detail, he also takes great care to acknowledge the inherent uncertainties of climate science, focusing his attention later in the book on the public and political interplay in the process of discovery and discussion about climatic change. He also leaves room for continued debate, although it's clear that he has been convinced of the potential dangers of global warming by the available evidence. For those who find the book short on scientific material, a link is included to a website maintained by the author which contains much more material and data. The author also lists links to other prominent sites for climate change information, including sites which argue against its existence. Overall, I appreciate both the passion and the evident fairness that the author brings to his subject which leads me to give it 5 stars. The Discovery of Global Warming (New Histories of Science, Technology, and Medicine) Overview

Climategate: A Veteran Meteorologist Exposes the Global Warming Scam ReviewI have followed this issue for several years. It took me a couple of years before I came to the point of view that Sussman lays out here. Global warming is a deeply insidious expression of Marxism with the express agenda of de-development and global wealth redistribution. This is as anti-capitalist and un-American as it gets. Sussman lays out the major issues well, which basically amount to cherry picking of data and manipulating mathematical models to produce the desired results.
What was so hard in my journey here as an engineer was to see that such a large segment of the academic and scientific community has been corrupted into religiously advancing this theory. The incentive system of having government funding as the primary source where you get funding to advance the theory, but sit out in the cold if you don't buy in is in itself rather disturbing. Sussman didn't delve into this aspect, but it is partially covered in the book "SuperFreakonomics". I have yet to see any author take on the challenge of how to reform science funding. For the sake of the continued contribution of science to human prosperity, this challenge must be taken up.
My only real criticism of Sussman is that he is preaching to the choir. He doesn't do enough to bring people along who are where I was a couple of years ago -- skeptical, but not quite able to believe the extent of the corruption. In my own journey the writings of Freeman Dyson at Princeton, Richard Lindzen at MIT and the well known systems engineer Burt Rutan helped me a great deal.Climategate: A Veteran Meteorologist Exposes the Global Warming Scam Overview
