Corporation Nation: How Corporations are Taking Over Our Lives -- and What We Can Do About It ReviewLike another recent book, "Opposing The System" by Charles Reich, this effort by sociologist Charles Derber takes aim against the elitist and anti-democratic influence of contemporary multi-national corporations. Noting that corporations have so invaded the social, economic and political arenas of life in modern postindustrial societies that it is problematic for an individual to live a free and meaningful lifestyle without surrendering vital parts of his liberty and free choice to the whims and caprices of corporate policy. Thus, Derber claims, corporations have transformed the meaning of citizenship into a silent euphemism for corporate membership, and the society tends to identify loyalty to these organizations as a sort of patriotism (buy American).
This is an interesting and entertaining reading experience, and Derber's thesis is similar to and compatible with a number of other contemporary social critics like Reich, Neil Postman, Bill McKibben, and Kirkpatrick Sales. To the extent the rise of multinational corporation to a position of nearly exclusive domination of world markets with the new "global capitalism" (touted by politicians as the best thing since sliced bread) continues and endures, to that extent will our lives be increasingly influenced and characterized the kinds of choice these corporate entities view to be in their own narrowly conceived and fundamentally anti-democratic goals and objectives. Thus, to an ever-greater extent, these corporate entities are empowered at our expense to influence, manipulate, and even dictate the specific terms of social, economic and even political transactions within and without our borders.
Probably this single greatest recent example of this trend were the actions by the U.S Congress to ratify both the NAFTA and GATT trade treaties, whose main beneficiaries were multinational corporate entities. There was little or no meaningful national debate,And most Americans were so distracted by their petty personal pursuits of money, material goods, and the good life that they hardly paid any attention to all this happening under their noses. Rather than focusing on these issues, the national electronic media chose to cover other non-news events like the Michael Jackson child molestation charge, the OJ Simpson trial, the Louise Woodward trial, the Monica Lewinsky scandal, etc. Meanwhile, the corporations achieved their goals, and the future of American worker was sealed. All this transpired without any meaningful or informed public debate. And isn't it quite a coincidence that the electronic media in this country is owned, lock, stock, and barrel by several different multinational corporations.
The author offers an alternative by way of what he terms "positive populism", by which he then outlines an alternative approach to re-engaging the American public in a self-enlightened attempt to regain control of their lives and future through the available political process. This is an interesting, provocative, and often entertaining book, well written and well argued, and one which will engage the reader in a thoughtful process regarding the nature of our contemporary situation vis-à-vis the powers that be. I highly recommend it. EnjoyCorporation Nation: How Corporations are Taking Over Our Lives -- and What We Can Do About It Overview

The Offshore Nation: Strategies for Success in Global Outsourcing and Offshoring ReviewOffshore Nation provides something most monoliths on offshore outsourcing are missing: the authors provide informed guidance on both the strategic decisions as well as the implementation challenges to successfully exploit global sourcing. The authors share their substantial data and case histories to illuminate each prescription. They address the entire process of offshoring, including country selection, customer models, supplier models, and most importantly, governance models. In particular, they describe the six areas of governance customers need to manage to ensure success: performance, financial, contract, relationship, resource, and operations. My favorite chapter is the total cost of offshoring. Too often, CEOs are mesmerized by the labor cost differentials, but our own research has found that the transaction costs of going offshore can represent 62% of contract value. The authors provide a total costing model of offshore, of which they found that wages are only 42% to 46% of the total costs of offshoring.
I recommend this book to any C-level executive, as well as middle managers charged with delivering global sourcing of business and IT services. My MBA students are reading this book for class and just love it. They read Friedman's The World is Flat, which provides an exciting, yet overly-optimistic view of global sourcing. Offshore Nation is a great companion read because it tempers Friedman's unbridled enthusiasm with the reality of delivery. Yes, global sourcing can delivery on its promises, but it takes a tremendous amount of detailed management to make it work.
--Dr. Mary Lacity
Professor of IS at University of Missouri St. Louis and author of six books and over 50 papers on outsourcing.

The Global Economic Crisis The Great Depression of the XXI Century ReviewYou want to read The Global Economic Crisis The Great Depression of the XXI Century, edited by Michel Chossudovsky and Andrew Gavin Marshall, if you meet these criteria: you welcome information and analysis about critically important issues that come from great thinkers outside the mainstream media and publishing world; you can handle brain pain from detailed and brutally honest revelations; you are willing and able to challenge your own biases and preconceptions to let in new explanations of how the world really functions.
If millions of Americans read this book, we would probably see a far stronger uprising against the political establishment that has refused to severely punish the countless guilty people in the financial, banking and mortgage sectors that brought down the US and global economic system.
This book ties together a large number of factors in twenty chapters that reveal just how corrupt the world has become because of the power of plutocratic, wealthy and corporate interests. From Wall Street corporate boardrooms to the Federal Reserve and other central banks to the US military and NATO, a multitude of threads get woven into a disturbing tapestry of crimes against society that still have not been prosecuted.
This book is truly an instrument of anti-brainwashing. If you are willing to spend serious time reading it, then you surely will become much angrier about the dismal state of the economy that is causing so much pain and suffering to ordinary people worldwide. If you personally have escaped the worst ravages of the economic meltdown, then you will have much more compassion for those severely affected.
In all honesty, if the current global economic crisis has made you angry, pessimistic, fearful, paranoid, despairing and worse, then this book will most likely exacerbate all such feelings. By revealing still more connections, implications and causes, this book will motivate you to do anything you can to fight the corporate, plutocratic forces devastating the lives of ordinary people. If you already have little confidence in government, it will only make things worse. Does all this mean you should avoid reading it? Absolutely not.
Here are a few statements from the book that resonated with me and that you can use to decide whether the general philosophic orientation of it is compatible with your views:
"Wall Street's Ponzi scheme was used to manipulate the market and transfer billions of dollars into the pockets of banksters."
"Government rescue packages around the world are corporatist in their very nature, as they save the capitalists at the expense of the people."
"The global political economy is being transformed into a global government structure at the crossroads of a major financial crisis."
Just gin up the courage to read it, get out several color markers to highlight passages and expand your knowledge to overcome all the propaganda constantly being hurled at you. We need more citizen unrest to energize more public protests to overthrow the powers that have corrupted and perverted our government. A key voice in the mainstream media that is in sync with the painful messages in this book is Dylan Ratigan who has a terrific daily show on MSNBC. He too should read this timely book.
