Nanoethics: The Ethical and Social Implications of Nanotechnology ReviewIn many books since Eric Drexler's "Engines of Creation," you eventually encounter a paragraph or even a chapter addressing the "ethical and social implications of nanotechnology." While these bits may just whet your appetite, you probably realized that, even if the author had devoted the entire book, the very nature of ethics demands multiple viewpoints.
And that is just what Nanoethics provides: an entire book for 40 diverse authors to explore the debate, put it in context, and analyze how we predict and evaluate risk. They examine issues in health, environment, democracy, policy, privacy, military conflict, education, and developing countries. They conclude with speculation on the ethical issues in the far future...you know, more than a decade out.
The inevitable price of so many authors is occasional repetition, as many introduce their articles with a nod to the seminal Feynman talk suggesting we could eventually build with molecular precision. The welcome benefit of so many authors is a diversity of viewpoints (e.g. Bill Joy and Ray Kurzweil differ on whether to develop powerful technologies). An unbiased viewpoint may be impossible, so it's best to get a multibiased one.
Don't expect simple conclusions because nanotechnology is subject to varying definitions and ethics are always subjective. I was impressed with how fairly the introductory chapter represented the arguments of others who claim that nanotechnology is insufficiently distinct from established fields of chemistry and engineering to warrant its own study of ethics. No use of the straw man for these authors, they made the case so well, I worried the rest of the book would be cancelled. Not to fear, the critics are addressed and the case made that, whatever the semantics of nanotechnology, issues important to society and species arise from what we call nanotechnology.
This would be a good text for an "ethics in science and engineering" course, but I found it quite good for pleasure reading. Whatever the venue, Nanoethics addresses important issues. Nanotechnology has the potential to transform our world and the way we live in it. With each new technology over the millennia, humankind has had the opportunity to make new choices. When we have not paused to consider our most deeply held values, we've made myopic choices. The more powerful the technology, the more important we evaluate our options carefully. Nanoethics helps us to consciously and collectively evaluate what may be the most powerful technology ever.

The Network: A Novel Review
Elliotts first novel obviously draws heavily on his real life experiences having spent time with the Mudjahadin in Afghanistan back when they were fighting the Russians.
The current story takes place before the bombing of the World trade Centre and involves a the induction of our "hero" into working for the SAS and returning to Afghanistan under Taliban rule but by way of a mission in the middle east in which friends appear to be enemies and the question of whom to trust is literally a matter of life and death.
The disposable nature of the people who work in this field is dramatically highlighted as is the age old question of who really is pulling the strings? On the face of it our man is working for the UK government but at the same time has a mentor who is part of an international group ( the Network) whose decision making transcends those of our elected representatives and their officials.
It's an excellent action, adventure read with enough political intrigue to spark a conversation between conspiracy theorists and skeptics alike. The story of comradeship in the face of adversity is timeless but exceptionally well done here and descriptive writing is of a high quality.
Given the timing of this plot ( pre 9/11) and what's actually happened in the world since then - the potential for subsequent stories involving the character and theme make it seem like a no brainer for a sequel and indeed a movie franchise.
A damned good read that made my transatlantic flight film free for once and left me wanting moreThe Network: A Novel Overview

The Notebook ReviewAbsolutely wonderful. Commentaries on world matters, George Bush, the economic crisis, religion, and much, much more by one of the greatest living writers. Erudite, literary, compassionate, provocative. Compare these with the commentary currently available...well, there is no comparison. If you love his novels, you will find the Notebook as compelling. If you have not read his novels perhaps The Notebook will serve as a good introduction. Then, I would suggest All the Names, whose themes resonate in some of these brief, but weighty observations. The Notebook Overview

The New World Order: Facts & Fiction ReviewThis book is truly fascinating. I purchased this book right after I read Dice's "Illuminati Facts & Fiction" (which is another book I highly recommend). I enjoyed this book (like Facts & Fiction) because it doesn't bog the reader down with unnecessary details to the point of boredom. Of course, this book is loaded with accurate details and facts; however, they are very straight-forward, so anybody, be it scholar or a curious high school student can enjoy.
Mark Dice has a talent for research and informing the public. Some might be familiar with his work in viral videos that expose the sad truths to America's neglect and carelessness for understanding the most important issues taking place all around the world or even some other alarming (and humorous) videos where he convinces ordinary Americans to sign petitions to ban Free Speech.
In New World Order: Facts & Fiction, Dice takes his well-researched historical knowledge of the parasitical New World Order & combines it with the many insidious current events taking place between the oligarchs of the one world government regime to create this book filled factoids that a polished expert of the New World Order or a open-minded novice can equally love reading this book, which is in fact a very easy read. I personally flew by the first 150 pages without realizing it.
Mark Dice is a devout Christian {like myself} & mentions it all the time, so if you are not a believer in any god, that should NOT be an excuse to disregard this book as fiction or 'religious paranoia.' This book, like Dice's others, is religiously unbiased because those Dice vehemently exposes (The Bilderberg Group, The Trilateral Commission, Skull & Bones, etc) could care less if you're a Atheist, devout Christian, or a anything in between because they are after humanity in the end with they ultra-powerful corporate/banker sadistic strangle hold on most institutions of this planet.
Dice's book does what the title says: it separates the FACTS from the FICTION. There are a lot of dis-info agents (Hal Turner, Limbaugh, Beck, etc) who will mention the New World Order with many facts/semi-facts but season it with several sprinkles of complete mis-truths; discrediting the movement and it gives people out there the mindset that those who mention the New World Order are connected with these agents of lies; smearing the logical and well-researched truth-seekers.
Get this book if you are pro-humanity, against corporatism, against tyranny, against lies, against the FED, and don't be afraid to spread the knowledge or fact-check anything Dice says in his book because the "Facts" are A LOT scarier than the "Fiction" once you've opened your eyes to the New World Order. The New World Order: Facts & Fiction Overview

The Rapture: In the Twinkling of an Eye--Countdown to the Earth's Last Days (Before They Were Left Behind, Book 3) ReviewThe countdown to the Rapture has begin and though he doesn't know it will happen soon, Nicolae Carpathia, is making plans with the help of his spirit guide (Lucifer) to take control of the world. He blackmails the president of Romania using intimidation and threats to his family into stepping down from his post and the outgoing president declares to the people that Carpathia should be the next president. Raymond Steele, enamored of flight attendant Hattie Durham neglects his wife and his young son Jamie, thinking they are fools for being so involved in the church.
Days before Carpathia makes his speech to the United Nations, the Rapture occurs and his sprit guide shows him how to use the disappearances to his advantage. Raymond's wife Irene has almost given up hope that her husband will turn into the man who showered her with love. When the trumpet sounds, Irene and Jamie are lifted into heaven given new bodies and minds. There they are judged for how they lived their life after they received salvation. They see and explore heaven and interact with God and his son. Irene, happy at last still prays that Raymond and Chloe, her daughter, will seek salvation through the Lord.
THE RAPTURE explores in depth the characters of the protagonists and the antagonists of the Left Behind series. It is a fulfilling novel that answers many questions not covered in the other books in the series like why Raymond's first officer committed suicide and how Carpathia persuaded the president of Romania to step down. The authors have written another fascinating and revolutionary work in a series that most readers wish will never end.

Let Me Call You Sweetheart ReviewLet Me Call You Sweetheart, by Mary Higgins Clark, was well written, but was not her best book. I found myself getting confused by the continuous scene changes. I enjoyed the book, but I have read better. This mystery had a good plot and Clark was very descriptive. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes mysteries, but before reading this I would try one of Clark's other books.Let Me Call You Sweetheart Overview

8W8 - Global Space Tribes: a post-modern journey through globalization in the internet age powered by the world modeling engine 8W8 ReviewRalf Hirt's 8W8 Global Space Tribes goes beyond the concept of a flat
world, it draws the reader into a virtual "What if?" reality. What if
the Internet could be used to erase national borders and
ethno-cultural divides creating entirely new social systems... global
space tribes!
Taking a ride in Hirt's 8W8 Global Space Tribes' Helicopter is more
than experiencing the Web 3.0 envisioned by Tim Berners-Lee as "an
overlay of scalable vector graphics (with) everything rippling and
folding and looking misty:" it's entering a 5-D world where Time and
Space serve as connective tissue further compressing an already
flattened world.
Eschewing technical jargon that could alienate the average
non-techgeek, Hirt, instead, introduces the reader to 15 individuals
who call themselves the Golden Sky. They are an IT think tank composed
of international business people, lawyers, politicians,
environmentalists, a musician, a doctor and a philosopher, all of whom
share one thing in common--a futuristic vision of the future. They come
together on the Big Island of Hawaii, in the home of one of their
members, Winston Chee, an IT entrepreneur, for a week-long break out
in which they intend to focus on an IT conundrum: how to make the
invisible, visible.
The author cleverly uses the house, itself, as a living entity that,
in many ways, embodies many of the same elements as their quest.
Called EA-RA, it is a six-story mansion built into the side of a
mountain. It's exterior is a semicircular sheet of black glass infused
with golden fiber which faces south and stretches in a semicircle 180
degrees from east to west. The effect is that it not only catches the
sunrise but the setting sun as well, all the while reflecting the
sun's rays like a golden mirror. Unseen and undetected from outside is
the vast interior which encloses a self-sustaining environment
including a farm on its ground floor, the entire panoply and
requisites of a modern spa and convention center on the the five top
floors, all of which are hidden from view to the outside observer.
The hero of the piece is a San Francisco based IT journalist called
Oskar Kiernan Feller, or more commonly called by his friends, O.K.
Fellow. He is probably a manifestation of the author, himself,
conflicted and driven. It is O.K. Fellow whom we first meet as he sits
in an airplane flying from San Francisco to an IT conference in
Berlin. It is a trip he has made many times in the past, but on this
trip he is gripped with a sense of anxiety. He has flown millions of
miles without an incident, but his mind has made a calculation that at
some point there had to be a "statistical fluctuation" which might
result in...? He tries to stop thinking about it by repeating a mantra
silently to himself.
Ultimately, somewhere over St. Louis he experiences an existential
moment when he begins to question what he is seeing. That results in a
dialectical switch where, for a moment, he is watching himself trying
to find like-minded individuals among the houses and buildings below.
We are introduced to all the main characters in the first two
chapters. Except for their different vocations, they all share the
same uneasiness as O.K. Fellow. They want to see the unseen elements
of their world. For some, it's a search to find people as
themselves, for the others, it is to be able to see the actual flow of
elements into streams and rivers which make up what they call "Global
Space Tribes."
Eventually, they develop the concept of a virtual helicopter which
they imagine could hover above the earth with an instrument panel.
This tool could discern hidden values from single elements to
concentrations of elements, "mountains," as they eventually see them.
This is a fast and enjoyable read for both the lay reader as well as
the technophile.8W8 - Global Space Tribes: a post-modern journey through globalization in the internet age powered by the world modeling engine 8W8 Overview
