The Call of the Writer's Craft: Writing and Selling the Book Within ReviewThe method is basically speed-writing a first draft by hand using a pen and oversized sketchbook (he recommends one that's 14 x 17). The thinking is that big paper helps you see the bigger picture better. Then you make a pass through it and use color-coded sticky notes to mark areas where you want to make changes, additions, or cuts. Then you type it in and then make another pass with colored highlighters to analyze your use of action verbs, passive verbs, adjectives, and adverbs and tweak it to make your writing more specific.There's some upfront stuff about facing your fears, left-right brain theory, connecting with God, and that writing is your calling from the Divine. The middle discusses his method, and then the rest is about publishing.
As a five-time NaNo 'winner,' I can say this particular method hasn't worked for me, even though I tried it multiple times. The writing-by-hand part helps because it slows down my thoughts and I get an actual coherent story on paper. But the speed-writing-without-censoring stuff has been a flop: I end up with a lot of rambling junk just to keep the pen moving that requires enormous amounts of editing, rather than anything I'd remotely call a 'draft.'
If you've ever participated in National Novel Writing Month, you won't see much that's new in terms of writing fast to silence your inner critic.
