Monitoring Exchange Server 2007 with System Center Operations Manager ReviewThis book is different than most. The author takes the time to not only explain what to do but also WHY and HOW. You can read the chapters on Exchange 2003 (Chapter 10) and Exchange 2007 (Chapter 11) and get your money's worth from this book.
The author doesn't waste your time covering the detailed history of Exchange 2003/2007 or System Center Operations Manager (SCOM). Necessary background information is provided to provide a basic understanding of Exchange, SCOM and system monitoring.
The author takes a very careful and thorough approach to getting you ready to monitor your Exchange environment with SCOM. First he takes you through installing, configuring and deploying SCOM. Second, he takes you through installing all the necessary SCOM management packs. Finally, you learn what to monitor, why you should monitor and how to monitor.
One advantage you will get from this book is not only will you learn but you will understand your Exchange and SCOM environment.
The book is not without issues but the issues generally are relatively small. One example is the explanation of RAID in the inset on page 41. It is stated that the storage space "in a RAID-5 array is (N-1), where N is the number of gigabytes of space on the smallest disk in the array". By that explanation, a RAID-5 set of 3 300GB drives would only be 299GB and not 600GB.
However, the author correctly states on page 40 that RAID-5 "has a one disk cost" and goes into extreme detail beginning on page 350 how to specifically calculate the performance of your disk subsystem.
One must presume that this is simply an error which got past technical editing.
Minor errors aside, this book is an excellent resource for learning and understanding how to monitor your Exchange environment with SCOM 2007.Monitoring Exchange Server 2007 with System Center Operations Manager Overview
